Well I think I have a bad fan clutch. When the motor is warm and I turn the engine off the fan continues to spin. I was told that means that I need a new fan clutch. If anyone can confirm that it would be awesome. Anyway I was thinking maybe I should get an electric fan instead of a new fan clutch and maybe add a few horses by giving my engine a break from turning the fan. What do you guys think, is that a good idea? what are the pros and cons?
 
I've also been thinking about switching to an electric fan. One of the reasons I'm considering that is the ability to turn it off for a water crossing that might be deep. I'd like to hear other pros and cons as well. Which fan are you considering?
 
Leave it stock.

Seriously, you shoudl not have overheating problems with a stock fan.

Also, you can repack the stock fan clutch with Toyota oil. it really is not too tough..
 
I haven't looked much at what is out there. I was going to look at Man a fre but I will look around and see what I can find and let you guys know. Also, it is not that I think the stock fan isn't great I just thought if you can take it off and get a few more horses why not? However, if I could easily repack my fan clutch I am sure I would just do that instead so I can put that money elsewhere on my rig.
 
When the fan clutch is working correctly, there is no parasitic horsepower loss. With the engine warmed up, but not hot, the fan clutch will slip so freely, that it is possible to grab the spinning fan at idle and stop it. Then let go of the fan and watch it slowly spin up to about a hundred RPM. Then, when the engine is shut off, the fan will spin down for a few seconds. All because there is no real connection between the pulley and the fan.

FWIW, the WP draws a lot more power (constantly, at that) than the fan does most of the time.
 
Fan

This fan is better than any high dollar fan on the market and it's cheap. Just need to do alittle fabing to make it work and fit.

These fans all were removed in working order. Each fan is off of a high end European manufacteured car and were made in Germany by Bosch. The dimensions are 24" wide 17" tall 3.75" deep and the fan blades are 16" in diameter. The CFM's this fan can flow are around 3000 which is very high. These fans can easily be fit to most radiators, just use your imagination.

I did I'm putting it on my 4runner that runs a 383 this weekend before moab... Great deal I think probably a volvo or BMW I got it for 40$ plus 20 for shipping
 
Ford Fan

Search Pirate and you will find an article about using the fan out of the 3.8 or 5.0 taurus. NOT THE 3.0 the difference is that the 3.8 and 5.0 taurus have two speed fans. anyway. I did this little conversion when I put my 350 in my FJ60 once upon a time. I had great results. I grabbed one of those 10 dollar electronic thermostats from autozone, a 15 dollar 85 amp battery isolation relay (it sounds like overkill, but on start up this fan draws 82 amps and then idles at 34 amps), a few switches, some wire, and I got the fan for 10 bucks at my local pull-a-part. These fans will do 3000 CFM (thus the 34 amps). If you have more questions about doing the ford electric fan swap, PM me.

Ya, Forsure, I really think it's money with a 16" fan @ 3000 CFM and a shroud to allow the radi to get all the air it needs. What do you think....

So it sounds like maybe I got some bad info and my fan clutch is fine. I haven't had any over heating problems yet, the needle sits right about the middle but when I was told this I was a little worried because I haven't done any hot weather wheeling yet since I just bought the rig in december.

Yeah, at this point it sounds like the truck is just fine.
