Swapping in Locking Axles into an Unlocked 93 FZJ80

The only difference that I'm aware of is the ABS sensors (which I believe are interchangeable as far as functionality, meaning a complete axle swap including wiring will work) and the wire harness routing. I put '95 axles under my '94 with no issues. Use whatever you find- they aren't exactly littering the street corners.

You are probaly best off overhauling the donor axles, which means you can reuse any bits you want, including knuckles. Whatever you do, don't do the in-the-field, "I'm stuck, I need lockers *now*" swap that seems to be documented in this thread: http://steer.ru/archives/2007/01/10/002518.php

The original seems to come from Iceland - anyone know what happened?

Having just complete this I would suggest simply swaping out the rear diff as opposed to the entire axle housing. See FAQ for details on this if you haven't already. It is really very simple.

On the front I know a 94 diff w/locker will fit into tha 96 locker housing.

I think there are other threads here.

Not to thread-jack, but !!

x2!! WOW!!

My opinion, pull all your mods, buy/trade-in for a locked 80, swap mods onto new, LOCKED 80. Just a thought.;)

That's a Russian site, all it says is;

Can't say I haven't thought of this.. however.. would this save me any cash? or just be the easier thing to do... I wouldn't mind haveing a '96-'97 vice '93.. however.. a '93 by no means is a bad vehicle.. mine so it happens.. is locker challenged and well.. swapping some pre-used ones would save me a lot of coin vice getting some arb air locker types...

It would be hard to quantify "saving you cash" by trading-in/up to a OEM locked 80. It would probably cost more money initially, but it's hard to calculate the savings/loss/reliablity/opportunity cost of another vehicle. But it could prove to be the wise decision. You have the potential to own an OEM locked 80 that is more solid and (I have no idea of your 93's current state) possibly more physically, mechanically, and electrically sound if you get a newer model(95-97)/and or have the new one,no matter what year, checked over and under.

YES!!

I didn't mean for this to be a hijack, nor am I certain that the vehicle is even an 80. The sight of a non e-locked front axle on the ice *is* awe-inspiring, though.

The thread is on a Russian site; the text merely says: "The more impressive the Jeep, the longer the walk back to go get the tractor." The orginals are from http://www.f4x4.is , where there are plenty of pictures of submarines-in-training, but I have not yet found that particular story.

I swapped e-lockers into my '94 and am happy to have a locked, baselined vehicle with a known history. Besides, doing the front and rear axle service as part of the swap was a good thing. I reused the '94 open 3rd on my '92. I was thinking about putting the full float (possibly e-locked) under my '92, but my plans got crimped.

As Cruiser804 and many others said, a housing + 3rd in front and a 3rd + a bit of grinding in the back is no big deal. Used, the cost will be less than $1300. New, the cost will be more than $3000. For me, it was the right thing to do.

Reread the Slee Info on this...

I was confused.. but now understand that it's the wiring harness that are not interswappable between 93-94 and 95-97...

That being said.. If I were to find a 95-97.. I'd probably still try and find a way...
