I've been having serious issues with my full hydro A442F transmission (HDJ81), but nobody can determine specifically what the problem is. At idle, it sounds like marbles are moving about somewhere in the bell-housing. During acceleration, lots of whining that gets higher pitched the faster the truck goes. Finally, a loud clacking noise every time the transmission shifts.

The worst is after the truck is warm. When sitting at idle in D or R, if you take your foot off the brake pedal, the truck jerks back and forth as if it were about to stall. Put it in Neutral, purrs like a kitten with no issue (the marbles sound is still there). The RPM drops from around 750 in Neutral to ~500 in Drive and the tachy very slightly fluctuates up and down during the jerking.

Anyway, the shop says they have an electronic A442F in working condition that they can swap in. My guess is that being electronic, and seeing as how my 1991 HDJ81 is built for a full hydro, this won't work as expected. Im in California so finding a full hydro A442F isn't going to be easy and i'd love to swap this electronic version in and call it a day...

Oddly, outside of the jerking at idle and the noises, the transmission shifts fine and doesn't appear to cause any loss of power. No leaks either.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Is this possible? If so, what sort of harness or other bits will be needed?

You can hear the clacking noise here:

Hopefully this shop has a very talented auto electrician. It's not impossible, but very difficult. It would require a whole additional wiring connector in the engine harness and removal of the dash. Unless there's a controller that works (ie compushift)

How many km's? Have you downloaded the FSM for the A442? Best to start there.

I figured it would be a tough job. No controller at the moment, but ill speak with the shop on Monday to make sure they know what they're doing. On second though, I think i'd rather just have them find what is going wrong with mine first...

I dont have the FSM for the A442F hydro. Any idea where I can get it?

can also just swap a hydraulic valve body into the electronic auto.

is this a fact i thought cases were different?

why don't you just rebuild?

parts are easily available internals are pretty much the same between a440 a442

as for repair manual, I found mine on eBay a while back on eBay Australia

I did end up rebuilding. Thanks for the responses.
Yourself or the shop?

Cost?

I know this is old. Doing some research.

Local shop did the rebuild. Cost me $5000 something, which is a joke, but that was roughly the same price I got from most shops around me. Ended up selling the transmission when a WAT Extreme came up for sale in the states. Didn't need the WAT, but damn, its rare to find one already here and brand new, ready to install...

That's just to rebuild the trans if you pulled it? Oooof

No, it included pulling / installing. I can't recall if im including the new torque converter I put in there as well. Its all a blur now, but IT IS expensive. You'll find others on various 80s Facebook Groups paying roughly what I did. There is no reason anyone should have to pay that, but I haven't found a shop that'll do it for a much better price.

I can pull and install it myself. So hopefully that eleviates a grand or 2.

I'll call torfab in a day or two after I dig I to the trans further and see what they say
