This setup seems to be kinda popular in the northeast. Is anyone running like this, and how does it work? I've been thinking about doing this to mine since rear lift springs will probably give me a crappy ride. I have no weight in the rear (fiberglass). Thanks in advance.

on what truck? a 40 or 60 series?

Sorry, it's a 40. I think Wally Moses has this setup, but I haven't talked to him in probably a year or so.

Yeah, Wally has that set up...SOA rear, SUA front w. shackle reversal.

That is the plan *someday* for my 60.

Also, Spencer from CT ran that setup on his 60...

I haven't been able to get a lot of feedback on how it handles/works.

basically, the shackle reversal lifts the front so much that it was "easiest" to just spring over the rear. it seemed to work fine, of course there is still more to drag if you are SUA In the front.

it becomes a real problem if you want to do a shackle reversal AND go SOA all around.

john, i will send you my shackle reversal for cheap if you want it. i still have it in the original box from my fj62

I had mine set up like that, but never had a chance to try it out. It also didn't sit level. I'm just wondering if this is worth doing on purpose. I know a lot of people do it just to level out the rear.

I wasn't planning on a reversal.

Wally can give you a good review of his SOA in the rear. From what I've seen and heard from others, it works well but can give you some big pucker factor in off camber situations. I guess it's how the SOA is done and there seems to be a wide range of lifts that can be achieved. Jim Real's 40 has a nice SOA that sits low and does not pitch and roll like most SOA's. There's also axle wrap to contend with that comes with SOA.

I'd stay SUA keeping the center of gravity down and being better planted in the rocks and in off camber stuff. But, what do I know. :D

Will the 40 be a DD, trail rig, or both?

As with all leafsprung suspesions the shackle angle has alot to do with how well they work, or like most 40s don't work;p. Most if not all of the lift spring for 40s give a horid shackle angle and hence bad ride / flex. The soa is still nice for a host of reasons but generally are way soft and a anti wrap bar is mandatory.

Jim's 40 is SOA? That's surprising, it didn't look that high at all. (Yellow and Rustoleum, right?). Sorry for the OT but does Jim have really low gears? That truck WORKED so well at FnF, pretty wild to watch (well driven as well).

Trail mostly. I don't think I could commute in it every day.

I'm planning on picking up some Q78's one of these days.

Yes, Jim's is SOA in the rear. His lift sits just about the same as my SUA 4" Skyjacker. Soft springs, light weight (for a cruiser) and VERY low gears. That truck goes better than most 40's I've seen and he is a great driver.

SOA + long wornout flat springs + long shackles at a 45 degree angle = smooth ride with a lot of flex and not too high

JJS, I would be looking at Jimbos rig (the yellow one in Wallys yard) and base your plan off that one. Wallys is super spooky on of camber spots (myself and a few others here have been dead weight on the up hill side) Jimbos got an sm 420 or 65 cant rember, small block and it just WORKS. Its a no nonsence truck, he built it without a lot of extra crap on it, and he knows the rig.

He wheels once ayear, and he dosnt back down, the rig just GOES.

I got some stock springs that still have the factory numbers on them if your interested.

Was that the SOA one that was going to have the tub replaced?

I have this setup, and it does work very well. Jimbos full SOA is a better way to go, and that truck is sporting a stock HP 350 rebuild, SM420/3 speed case, arb's and 4:88's on q78 swampers. The soa was done at home with a cut and turn, with quarter eliptic buggy leaves, pinned back to control the ride/flex. I have never seen him have to unpin them, the truck works too well as is.

Mine is not as spooky as wally's off camber, not sure why. Of course, for the last year, it has not been spooky at all, and the only off camber stuff it has seen is on the flat drivers side bogger making the truck lean in my garage.

I dunno it was leaning pretty good under that tree for the last 2 years before it was parked in your garage...

JJS, you need to get that thing rolling, dont pull a Rabid... Wheel it first then mod it.

oh, here we go. Hey, do you remember when we were wheeling my 67 10 years ago....no? Oh, that's right. You were 15. 10 years ago, I had a nice fj40. This one. I had it 12 years ago. You were rockin, what...a chevette? Oh, that would be the following year, since you were too young to drive. There is way more paint from my 40 left on the rocks of NE then your trailer queen will ever see. How did you like homestead last year? Not there again, that's right. Bite me, hippy. There are plenty o people on this board who have been wheeling with me when you were still waiting for your voice to crack. :FLIPOFF2:
