1977 fj40, drove it and smelled burning, I wondered why I could only go 35 in fourth gear, made it home ok, looked underneath, saw that the pads were tight against the ?drum? , sorry newbie. If I pump on the pedal first pump is easy, then by the 4th, it's hard to move the pedal. On the road the truck would stop but it took a while and a decent amount of pressure. There's also a lot of caked on dirt on the underside of the truck, thanks for helping me learn about my fj

I'm a newbie and would take pics if I could, I'm not sure how much space should be between the pads and the rotor, but it looks like they're touching. When I drove her I smelled something burning and after a mile when I stopped the outside of the rim was fairly warm to the touch, I assume that's bad right? Sprayed some wd 40 on the area I could see and it moved a little easier when I pushed on the tire, but it made a grinding sound, again I assume that's not good. Thanks again for all the quick replies, checking this forum is so much better than getting my paperwork done for my job:)

THe pad does rest on the rotor so any movement of the pedal puts pressure on the rotor. You should nver put oil on the rotor as it will get on the pads and Prohibit stopping. Jack it up and see if you can turn the wheel by hand that will tell you which side is not releasing or if your problem is else where. Smoke and burning smell is bad though. Is it the park brake?

When I purchased my 77, I had a problem that the fronts would lock up and after 45 minutes or so they would unlock. This was do to old brake fluid (most likely original) that turned to a thick mess. I believe it was not letting the pressure equalize to release the pads until it slowly bled back. This led to flushing the lines, and replacing most of the major part do to the fact that the master was leaking into the booster ect...ect...
