Fellas,

Went out to start the 60 a few days ago and found that I had no clutch pedal. I mean it went all the way to the floor with no resistance whatsoever. It was operating perfectly prior to that. Seeing that there was a fresh stain on the driveway underneath and no fluid in the reservoir I assumed I had a failed slave cylinder. A couple days later and my new Aisin slave and master arrived on the doorstep.

The master went in no problem but the slave is killing me. I cannot get the flexible line off. After initial resistance I soaked it with some PB blaster. Also picked up some flare nut wrenches from HF. I let it sit for two days before trying again and now I really f'd it up. Even with the flare wrenches I managed to round the nut and I don't believe it can be saved but I am open to suggestions.

Any of you guys have a clever/brilliant solution? I was hoping to do this without hacking the line off and having to get a new one.

A lousy pic of the slave taken moments ago:

Just replace it.

Remove the hose from the hard line side, then use a vise or replace the flex line.

New hose time for two reasons. Rounded hex and it's a 30 year old hose! Get a SS hose and be done.

Keep in mind all the brakes hoses are 30+ years old also! When I replaced my brake hoses, the peddle was firmer and she stopped better too without the hoses expanding.

Even if you do get it off w/o hacking it, tightening it down correctly will be a chore and you'll have the same removal headache when the line needs to be replaced in the future. I buggered up a few lines recently, HF flare nut wrenches I might add, and my pain went away when I cut it off and put a new line in it's place. Easy!

Agree with everyone as I am going through the same thing about 30 miles south of you. The two lines that go from my clutch slave to my brake master have been rounded off by the previous owner and even with vise grips I cannot get it off, thankfully I am replacing the brake m/c so I picked up new hard lines from O'Reilly.

I am taking care of this next weekend when I get back to town as my brakes are just about gone. You been to one of the local BBBCNN meetings? Always looking to meet new cruiser guys in the area and next months meeting is a special one.

I was actually at the last BBCNN meeting. Where were you? I'm going to try to to make the next one, I think it will be really interesting.

OEM Clutch hose

Not sure if its the same for an 84 but I just purchased a new hard line and hose last week OEM for an 87, so you should not have any issues locating them.

I would bolt the slave back on so you have a solid mount and then try removing it. Also I have tried several line wrenches and the most sucessful ones are Snap-On. They are expensive but there is a difference. Of course you can buy a new hose several times for the price of the line wrench.

pipe wrench will take it off no prob but deff replace the line. after its off just take it to a hose shop and have them make you one if you cant find one.

I wanted to share the rest of my experience resolving my clutch woes and perhaps it will proof useful for another in the future.

I received my new clutch line from Specter a few days after the last post. At $34 plus shipping it was spendy but with my long work days I simply did not have time to go to a local shop and have one made. So that next weekend with my new clutch line and renewed determination I got after it. I cut the old flex line off and successfully removed the slave cylinder but that damned fitting was firmly attached to the hard line and would not budge. Not to be deterred I grabbed the impact wrench and gave it some torque. Sure enough it came loose but with part of the hard line still attached :mad::mad:.

After researching the subject here I determined that the oem hard line is NA. I did find on another thread that Autozone sells the correct size line (3/16) with the right 10m x 1.0 fittings and correct flared ends in various lengths. Removing the hard line was not too bad except for the one clip directly behind the block. Stubby wrench to the rescue! The clutch hard line is 5' 6" so i got the 6' length from autozone. With a cheap tube bender that i already had and some trial and error I was able to mimic the old line pretty well. Inserting it behind the engine was not too bad but getting it back into the clips was a bitch.

The remainder of the install was routine. I really hope these parts last another 28 years because I sure don't want to go through this again soon. Here's a few pics:

LOL.. I bought mine from NAPA thankfully!
I was not at the last meeting because of my m/c going and didnt want to risk it completely giving on me. Replaced it this weekend and I now have brakes!! Well aside from one of the hardlines going from the m/c to the slave leaking (which I get to fix tonight.....

Definitely see ya at the next one. Since BeBe is my only driver (and at the last meeting I was the only one that showed up in my LC, she should be pretty easy to spot (aside from the vanity plate FJ6TY).
