is anyone running a ball bearing turbo, and if so has anyone toasted one. mine started making a bit of a whining noise recently, it doesent seem to effect the performance. but it has definatly changed its tune a bit. it is a ihi rhf5hb if anyone knows where to find a rebuild kit that would be great.

Take the inlet off and see how it feels to your fingers.

I did that first thing and it feels good absolutly no play

boost leaks sound kinda weird somtimes
does it make the noise under boost or at idle
when you shut it off can you hear the bearings sounding like rough bearings
they spin for quite a while after you shut off the engine

ya it makes noise when I shut it down, pretty sure its a bearing. the question is where do i find new bearings. I will check the local turbo shop in the morning, maybe bc bearing or somthin

where are you from
in Kamloops Thompson Diesel Injection would be able to get you going

Vinny :

Check local speed shoppe - they will know the good turbo guys - IHI ball bearing - look into replacing with ceramic ball bearings - is yours a water jacket cooled or just oil ?

Is this a IHI from a Mazda mark 3 or Ford 4 cyl - or from a Turbo Coupe ? you may be having an occurring issue if the smaller IHI from say MX6 - I believe they have aluminum bearings - not certain

Some IHI do not have great reps - if you have to have the collar milled - may be better off looking into spending that money on a different turbine

do keep the board informed however you progress - i am in the midst of amassing pieces for a turbo add on to my 3B ( Supra donated a CT26 ) as well as swapping a 22RTE CT20 Water jacket cooled into my 2LT- I was daydreaming about a CT20B for the 3B - toyota's ceramic spindle version of CT26 - from an MR2

cheers:

The turbo is out of a 2007 subaru wrx their part # is vf22 I checked the local turbo diesel shop they specialize in injection pumps and turbos, he was having trouble tring to track down the rebild kit and is yet to get back to me. I was kind of wondering if maybe I pulled a bearing and took it to a bearing shop they could match it up? any ideas where I can find ceramic bearings

Turbo bearings are a completely different animal to your average industrial bearings. You need the real parts here.

Here is the guy I spoke with a fortnight back about upgrades to my CT26

your IHI is new technology - so you will have a swarm of options and I am sure from a swarm of suppliers as well

I will give you an example of some prices - Shaft /wheel balance should run 30.oo-35.oo$ USD
Dunno about ball bearings

My concerns when I install the CT26 to 3B :
Turbo is in excellent shape / within spec tolerance
I have proper oil pressure to turbo - tested at turbo oil line
I have proper coolant flow - tested at coolant line to turbo
change oil in 3B regularly - keep a good portion in glass jar after changing with a magnet glued to outside bottom of jar to see what metal flakes I am getting in oil - if necessary - install a bypass oil filter - my engine probably has at least 400K Km - would not surprise me if I had 500K

Obviously you purchased a used WRX turbo - question is how used , even abused as WRX's are classic drifts - could have been replaced out of necessity - or could not . Hard to say - these days I find it difficult to really trust anyone /story selling me used parts these days- turbines are so abused these days

i will caution you to ceramic BB's - China is making many these days - you get what you pay for - Kyocera is the best manufacturer ,Korea - research where they are coming from - plenty of WRX forums online and the members will school you well

Say - last thing - curious - what did you pay for this IHI ?

good luck & Happy New Year

cheers:

BTW the IHI RHF5 series used in diesels are non-servicable. If they give any trouble you swap the whole core. I know the smaller subaru turbos are the same but I'm not sure about the VF22.

While this may sound terrible, the guys I know who've had to replace a core found the prices very reasonable.

ya the bearing shop said highly unlikley. the turbo shop said non rebuildable, I havent been able to find a new cartrige. I have excellent oil pressure, good cooling, and the oil had only 1000 miles on a freshly rebuilt 3b. I got the turbo for practically free my buddy was just upgrading to new turbo. I will call the guys in california to see what they say but i think I may be SOL. I have a fair amount of turbo knowlege having rebuilt and installed several garret t3-4's a kkk and a couple of ihi all on different 3b cruisers. I really like the vf22 though it spools real fast and gives me about 28 psi peak around 17psi or so at 2000rpm. super responsive compared to the journal bearings

Say Vinny :

seems I have heard some of this before - though I say if you can build it - you can take it apart and rebuild it - what do I know .........
Ball Bearing Turbo's spool very fast eh - why I was daydreaming of the CT20B- though I wonder just how much can you push a 3B before your overtax the moteur and risk premature failure
I will like to see how you plumbed your intercooler - as am looking to utilize the intercooler I pulled from the Supra

good luck on you

cheers:

the intercooler plumbing is sweet, although I had to cut a hole in my hood, i was waiting to get my scoop finished before I took photos, but I will try to get some up soon

Say Vinny :

No rush - no worries - when you are ready - have not decided yet if I should top mount or front mount

cheers:

so I just ordered a brand new td05 16g it was pretty a reasonable price and it is supposed to be an upgrade from my old turbo, and best of all you can get a rebuild kit for it
