Strange FJ62 oil leak

Hey all,

So my 62 has been leaking from the back of the oil pan for a while now. I have the part and plan on tackling the job soon, but I've noticed a strange trend I would love some light shed on. The truck leaves the typical puddle in right at the back of the oil pan where the leak is, but every now and then, one will form further back, under the transfer case. I noticed today that this only happens after long trips where I'm sustaining 70mph for a while. My question is, is this likely oil that leaked out of the pan and then was blown back to the tcase by wind? Or am I looking at the possibility of another leak?

I'm not familiar with the 3F, but I just had this same issue with my 2F on the 60. The rear of the pan was leaking and while driving sustained distances the oil would puddle in the clutch cover, then drip further back then the actual leak. Thought it was a rear main until I dropped the clutch cover and found the excess oil.

Just did a new pan and gasket this weekend, cleaned up the undercarriage and all is good now.
 
Check and make sure that the leak under your transfer case is indeed motor oil. Gear oil will be a bit thicker (similar to maple syrup). A leak from your front output shaft seal, will run down the bottom side of you t-case and puddle toward the rear end of the case.

The leak at the rear of your oil pan, could be just the gasket, or it could be the RMS. Remove the clutch inspection cover and clean it up. Then try and get a better view of the problem. post some pics. A bad rear main seal will usually produce a lot of oil back into the clutch area.

Thanks for the tip. I have a 62 with an auto though. Any equivalent procedure for that?
 
Clean the area that gets saturated with oil really well so it's nice & clean with no oil residue. Get it clean enough so when you wipe a clean paper towel on the area the towel stays clean.

Then drive the car or wait until the oil starts dripping & weeping again.

Wipe the oil that has weeped out on the metal with your finger and smell it.
Motor oil, ATF and gear oil all have a distinctive (gross) odor.

If you're not sure what you're smelling, pull the engine oil dipstick and smell that to compare. Same with the auto tranny dipstick. Gear oil (transfer case) smells like ungodly hell.

Well, I crawled under there and things look worse than I thought. Upon closer inspection, it's actually leaking more ATF than anything. In fact, there's ATF EVERYWHERE, from the front of the bellhousing all the way back to my rear shock! I think this transmission was overfilled. I checked the level and it was still over the hot mark, despite how much has clearly leaked out.

I'm not sure how helpful this will be, but I took a close up video of the underside of the truck. There was too much fluid leakage to capture in photos. At this point I'm assuming this has to be the RMS and maybe a few other seals as well, but any insight is appreciated.

 
If the oil pan is a known leakage point fix that first. At 70 mph a small oil leak can look large after the oil has been distributed under the truck. If your tranny fluid level is high check the oil level in the t-case. If t-case oil level is low you may have had the inner seal fail allowing gear oil to migrate into the tranny.
