looking for some diagnosis help.

2003 LC. 155K on the odometer.

My wife's car for last 10 years. I started driving it last week.

My trouble is this. When stopped at a light (in drive), I occasionally get this sound that is very hard to describe.

It is periodic, almost like something rotating. and it has a resonance to it that sounds like a little bit like a bell. a deep bell that is being rung very gently. maybe a couple of rings per second.

sort of like something is hitting a housing? or maybe a pulley? maybe a pump?

in any event, it certainly sounds like it's coming from the engine compartment and i have only noticed it when the vehicle is sitting at a stop light. the noise stops as a lift foot off the brake and accelerate. it seems to only comes back at a full stop (i.e. not when i'm braking to slow down).

going to try and get it to replicate in my driveway this week and see what i can see under the hood.

thanks in advance.

May be the "D" vibration and/or heat shield. "D" vibration happens while at stop in drive, often accompanied by a slight drop <~600RPM. Pulley(s) will be easy to pin point in most cases, just by getting under the hood especially before/during engine warm up.

thanks for the suggestions. i was not aware of the "D" vibration.

upon further searching in this forum, i stumbled on this video posted by some kind cruiser owner…..it sounds an awful lot like the noise posted in this video (thanks to buddy sharp)

so i will check the engine cover and see if there is any play in it. hopefully that's it. it's a very disturbing noise.

One trick that works when trying to isolate noises is to use a hose or a short length of pipe held up to your ear as a stethoscope. It helps you isolate specific areas of the engine bay while tuning out others.
