Yeah I know I am gonna get crap for this but... I cut my resinator off at the axle area aiming down which is fine. But I have a lot of restricted air flow because I have dented up the whole exhuast pretty bad. So I was thinking since my gasket at my clamp right where the cats meet the muffler together has worn through and the pipes are just hanging there to just do a pipe from the cat back to the axle are like it is now. That way I have better airflow and it will probably sound better too. But that is my question. Does anyone have this setup? And if they do how does it sound? I was thinking 2 1/2 inch pipe or possibly 3 inch if it would fit. Any suggestions? I don't have the money right now for muffler and all that and I want to try just straight pipe. I got a shop right near me that can do it all for me and they have the pipe. So all suggestions are helpful. Thanks!

P.S. I love the power it gives without the muffler also. :D

Oh I didn't know about the back pressure. Im sure this is a newb question but please explain.

exhaust gasses are corrosive. you want to carry them out to the back of the vehicle or at least have a side eject the gats it clear of any part of the vehicle.

call your parents and tell them you need a new axhaust system.

So what do you suggest for an exhaust system since I need to redo it anyway? I would like a low deeper sound but I don't know what to go with.

I used a Magnaflow. It's louder and cheaper than a stock muffler. Make sure whatever you do, you pipe the exhaust out, don't leave it open ended under your vehicle.

1. Borla offers a cat-back system
2. Any good shop should be able to bend you up a nice set up to your specs
3. Do a search on "exhaust" and/or "cat-back" under the 80's section and you should find quite a bit of reading

I did duals from the cats back with a dual inlet/outlet flowmaster.

It sounds great, improved performance, MPG, and runs cooler all for about $350.00

the condensation of gasoline internal combustion engines has SULFURIC ACID contained in it (remember back to science class) this stuff = bad news for most things it comes in contact with #304 stainless steel piping is 18% Cr and 8% or more NI thus allowing it to generally resist the effects of sulfuric acid for the life of the vehicle. So in short usw the nice stainless borla system (see c-dans rig for nice exhaust pipe outlet location) and keep it quiet for the rest of the world.

Thanks guys for the help. Does anyone have any good pics to show me of outlets where the exhaust should come out? I do a lot of rockcrawling, trail riding, mudding, so pretty much everything. I rather keep it out of the way so it doesn't get banged up like my last one.

Doesn't Borla have a cat-back system? Why not that route?

The problem with most muffler shops and bending pipe is they don't have a mandrel bender, so the more curves and bends you get in the pipe the worse it is going to flow (Borla is mandrel bent). Plus most don't use stainless (Borla does).

If you are going to just tear it up again, then yea you probably should just get a new pipe and muffler so that if it gets jacked up again you aren't out 500 bucks.

The issue I would be more concerned with than the corrosive properties of exhaust gas (as far as dumping it under the truck, though it could potentially be a problem) is if you are sitting idle at a stop the fumes could leak into the cab. I ran a pipe that dumped under the bed of my tacoma for years with no corrosion issues (and it blew on the rear axle housing and suspension).

A magnaflow or flowmaster 40 series would probably be about the throatiest sound you are going to get out of a 6 if you are looking at changing just the muffler. I have never heard a landcruiser with straight pipes but my 3.4L v6 tacoma with no muffler sounded killer at idle and like a lawn mower when I was on the gas.

Hi Stuck, let me add some additional data ... I had the closest thing to the straight pipe yer talkin about; right after my cat (a 3" hi-po, hi-flow from magnaflow) I had about three to four feet of straight 3" pipe going straight back between the outside of the PS frame rail and the inside of the PS rocker panel. It then took a short 30 degree bend sideways right at the end to kick the exhaust gasses out right before rear tire.

That setup was removed and redone when I got the great Slee Step Sliders (1st Gen) cause the big brackets interferred with the pipe.

There was no noticeable difference that I remember between the original straight pipe setup and the redone 3" mandrel bent exhaust I then went with with magnaflow muffler and the original magnaflow cat. As someone above mentioned, most of the backpressure, straight pipes or not, will come from the cat. After that as long as things are mandrel bent (like the systems mentioned above) you are not gonna notice any drop in performance, especially without forced induction where backpressure matters most. FWIW I would get either the Borla system or if MAF is still selling their "high performance exhaust system" get that one. HTH.

Thanks guys. Yeah the issue I forgot to mention is that it is my daily driver and I need to be able to drive it this coming week so I need something quick and if its cheap it can be temporary. This is because I don't have an exhaust right now because I ripped it off because the exhaust was so banged up I was getting no power out of it. It has a smash that is almost flat. So now I can't drive my truck cause the exhaust seeps into the cab. This guy can do it for cheap from what I heard and he is convenient. But if I am not happy with the system I will probably redo it over the summer. So I am going to talk to him tomarrow about what yall said and see if he can make it just as best as possible with the pipes he has and put a straight pipe on. I will definity be leading it outside the truck like yall said for corrosive reasons. I will probably have it come out where the stock location has it come out but more tucked in. Thanks again guys and any other suggestions are appreciated.

Well I ended up salvaging the muffler and having him put a new gasket on behind the cats and weld me up some pipe to it to take it out the back. I hope this setup works well. I will let you guys know on the sound and stuff when I get it back. Thanks again for the help.

not to thread jack or anything, but does anyone have pictures of a straight pipe done on their landcruiser?

i have straight pipes on the four runner,no cat, witha new ford muffler from the 60s;) father in law found it in his garage and i needed a cheap setup.works great no power loss,a little better on the hills and fuel.but a new setup such as magnaflow will soon to come.man that muffler weighs like 20 pounds:eek: .heavy old bastard

Cruiser88, that wouldn't be "straight pips" now would it? :flipoff2:

I know that my '92 with just cats and no muffler was too loud, but I think a glasspack would have been enough to settle it down.
