is anyone running a straight pipe exhaust system? Basically from the bolt flange back?
If so how does it sound? run?
what size piping did you use?
where is the location of the outlet?
exhaust tip?
notice in power?

thanks for your 2 cents bruddas!

Which flange? After the y-pipe joins together?

Just going out on a limb here, but it is probably illegal to run an exhaust without a muffler in California. Unbolt your exhaust right behind the y-pipe and see how loud it is.

Even if you do decide to run it, you will probably see similar gains as those who have replaced the y-pipe to a URD or Doug thorley that remove the cats ( and gives less back pressure). You might see some more HP on the high end (above 3500rpm) but you will loose torque on the low end.

I had a JBA with a down turn right after the muffler and that was way too loud for my liking.

-the URD and Doug Thorley remove the cats?? i know for sure that is illegal in cali... not having a muffler is too im sure... just kinda curious if anyone has takin the muffler out, left everything else and just straight piped it back to the rear.

I had a TRD that was way too loud. Open pipe would be obnoxious. Find some other way to get attention if you crave it that much.

--def not craving attention.. just curious

you can't drive a NA straight pipe .. even a turbo gasser would be loud ..

--what's NA?

I found this on youtube.. what do you guys think?? (granted the mic isn't the best sound quality)

Straight Pipe FJ

not sure exactly what his setup is...

NA - Naturally Aspired (AKA) an engine that does not use any means of forced induction such as a turbo, super charger or injected system *NOS*.

FI - Forced induction (AKA) a means of gaining power by forcing more air into the combustion chamber which then forces the ECU to pump for fuel giving more energy and more power out of the engine.

do note, removing parts of the exhaust simply to have it straight is more or less a hinderence to newer toyota (and other makes) engines. almost all of the newer engines are designed to run with some amount of restrictive flow on the exhaust for 2 reasons. 1 - to improove low end power band for normal daily use by your normal daily end user. 2 - the restrictive back pressure alows for exhaust gases to stay trapped within the combustion chamber limiting the amount of oxygen intake which limits the amount of fuel that is to be used to keep a common R/A rating... in turn improoving fuel economy. removing the restrictive back pressure can and more than likely will greatly reduce your fuel economy. i had a scion xB in the past, of which runs on the same design. i removed the restrictive exhaust for a few days to see for my self, my 37mpg went down to around what i get now in the FJ at about 20-22 which is made up from about 80% highway, 15% city and 5% offroad for both vehivles *offroad being none paved*.

My friend and I had the bright idea to disconnect his muffler from the cats.......in other words there was nothing from the cats back. It was loud, but more importantly, V6's sound AWFUL without mufflers. If sounded like a 1950s carburated pickup that was on its last leg. Having a loud exhaust is fine IMO, if thats what you like, but it needs to sound good. The 1GR does not sounds good without a muffler.......and its really loud.

honestly, the only engine from the GR family that sounds good with a loud exhaust is the 2GR when it hits about 5k rpm. sounds like a mean monster indy car... the 1GR's bigger litre size just makes it too throaty and it doesn't have the right rpm range for it either.
