Has anyone in the group tried this yet?

https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/167864-more-cargo-room.html

It looks like a good idea - comtemplating looking into it and wanted some feedback. Ive seen some great "above" storage like on clark3's unit but was thinking about going under so as to keep the 3rd row available and keep some storage.

Thoughts?

I think its a great idea, but you would really have to give it some thought in what you would keep in there. There will always be something on top you will have to slide out and most likely put on the ground. He did put alot of stuff in there didnt he?

i was looking at this a while back! i have gone back to this thread a handful of times contemplating it! i know that i would be keeping a set of tools, as well as mounting an air compressor back there. stuff that you need, but dont need taking up space in the back. does anyone know someone who can fab some of these up at a reasonable price? i would definatly be in!

azrider, you going up fri or sat this weekend?

That's a hottub for a midget.

There are certain altitudinally challenged members of our club who might find that statement offensive. Luckily I am not one of them and take great amusement in the thought of Carl and 42 of his little buddies taking a well deserved break at the factory and chilling in the FJC hot tub contemplating the newest tweaks to the "Everlasting Gobstoppers" recipe. Ah the joy that the minds eye can bring.

Bwahahaha ROTFLMAO

The supports under the floor that are cut, are the structure for the 3rd row, so you loose the seats. Not something that I would do, first I'm not comfortable with the lost structure and you would have to unload all of the cargo in the back to access it?

Have thought about adding cargo carrying ability under there, for water, etc. It would be accessible from under the rig.

i am not worried about the third row of seats. i dont really forsee ever using them again. is there really a problem with structural integrity with this? once the box is bolted in nice and snug? the things that i would want to keep in there would not need to be accessed often,(i hope). like i said, mounting a compressor is there, tools, spare parts. stuff that hopefully, could just hang out waiting for a rainy day. originally i wanted to put a second battery in there, but venting it out looked like too much of a pain. i dont want to put drawers in the back, and this to me would be a good option.

just my .02.

ill be going up there Saturday morning, and you? I'll meet up with a few at the Baja station for the convoy.

??? Wrong thread there maybe?

You feelin alright? Your back acting up again? Back on the pain meds? A little loopy?

Im not concerned with unloading as the items stashed would be under the heading of "brought along but probably not needed" and wouldnt bother me if I did.

Of more concern is your point of losing the 3rd row seats. Even though I dont use them frequently, I still wouldnt want to lose that option and certainly want the intact structure to hold (seats down) the kiddies in. Thanks for pointing that out Kevin - I may want to rethink this one.

:o
I couldn't resist Rob's post. It's just the smartass in me. I love it!
But I have to agree with my other bro Kevin. Cutting a hole in the rear floor is a pretty serious decision. There are many better ways of making rear area storage that do not require that level of commitment. There are many threads on 80 series tech that deal with this subject.
If you don't want to really commit, there is always my approach. Rubbermaid makes roller trays to fit under a twin bed. They fit perfectly in the back of the 80. I have two in the back of my 80. The right one carries all of the tools, Winch controls, Tow straps, Tire patches, and the tire pump. The left one carries the chairs, tables, CB radio, antenna, and etc. On the sides next to them are located; on the right, a 2000w power inverter (I can run a microwave or a table saw) On the left side, jumper cables, a gallon of coolant, 2 gallons of oil, a bottle of brake fluid. These things are in the truck at all times. I don't leave home without them.
Over all of this, I have a plywood panel to keep it all contained. That is important, more than you might think.
Back in my desert buggy days..(Read as an off-road sports car going way too fast on rough roads.) I learned about UFO's. Unidentified flying objects are dangerous. Once an object such as a hammer hits your head, you may not identify it until you wake up from your coma. :whoops: So it is best to make sure that it is tied down and is unable to hit your head while you are trying to drive. It really sucks to get hit in the head :bang: when you need to pay attention to the trail. So be sure to tie everything down securely. Loose equipment in the truck is unsafe. Tie everything down really tight. Even a small item like a camera can hurt in a rollover. Ask Rob. His camera was crushed in his roll. It didn't really take any real blow, it just hit the wall when the truck went over. Tie everything down securely!
