Stock tires can't really be this bad

With my 4Runner that I just sold. I had the KO’2’s on for 25k miles. No issues of any kind and they look like they were about 50 percent worn, evenly at that.
That is cool, read nothing but positive stuff about these tyres over here, that is why the reviews on the Goodrich site were surprising.

How’s the ride/sound when compared to the Dunlops? Thanks!
200 miles since swap. Ride is quiet and solid feeling. I definitely made the right choice.

So I had the KO2s for a week now on the LX570 but everytime I drove on them it felt that I made the wrong decision. They are heavy which slows down acceleration and the other problem is because the LX is so quite, I could hear the tire noise more which is so annoying. The great thing is that they came with a 30 day/500miles return policy so I decided to return them and go back to the Michelin Defenders instead.

Thanks for the honest feedback. I'm torn bewteen KO2's or Michelins. We dont go off roading, but i'd like to have something more aggressive. If it's that noisy then I dont think i could do the tradeoff.

I can't speak to the KO2's specifically but any AT tire, even those rated "quiet" are going to be noisier than all season p-metric tires. The BFGs have a particular tread pattern that may exacerbate the noise. My Nitto Ridge Grappler's are sooooo much better in the snow than the factory Bridgestone's that it's worth a bit of noise, but they have a definite mid-range hum that starts around 15mph.

Your tires aren't too loud, your stereo is too quiet.

For the occasional snow that we get in n. VA, the Defenders were fine. Just after hitting the side curb and puncturing 2 pf them I thought that it made sense to go with the Ko2s just to try them out. I really don’t listen to anything while driving but the other day we went to a nearby mountain for skiing and drove 200mi @80mph and I had to find something to listen to, just to make the situation better. Then I realized that it would be better to admit that I made a mistake and return them than suffer for the rest of their thread life. Now for those who need the AT tires, they make sense and the positives would definitely be worth it. However, for the looks or whatever the other reasons are, they are not worth it.

There's certainly a spectrum of us on the boards, each with different priorities and preferences. There's a spectrum of AT tires to match. Best is the right balance of qualities to suit the individual. Some qualities come at the direct expense of others. K02 are at the aggressive end for sure, bordering on M/T tire qualities.

I posted this elsewhere. It might help you find a better tire to match your needs:
The Michelin would likely be the top choice if on-road quality and NVH are your utmost priorities. Obviously at the cost of perhaps durability, but they should be more durable than any Highway Treat (HT), P-rated tire. I would stay away from an E-rated tire though, as that will be detrimental to ride quality. Unless you're building heavy, or need the durability off-road. A good balance would be "XL" or extra load tire. Better than a P, but not a D or E-rated stiff sidewall tire either.

Some other choices in the more asphalt focused AT tires would be Nitte Terra Grappler, Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 2, or Goodyear SilentArmor. Note that all AT tires will get louder as they wear.

That’s nice wonder what they do with those used tires but KO2’s are not for everyone. I love mine, looks, size, big truck tires for a 6000+lb SUV. But I never drive anywhere without the music gong. I’ve never noticed any noise or vibration. They are really great on the interstate when the suspension is set to sport and in town when set to normal. I got the 285/55/20 size @56lbs per tire. I think your Defenders in stock size will weigh about 29lbs each. Kind of like comparing combat boots with lightweight track shoes ;)

O just replaced my Duelers that were placed on the rim in Sep 2004. I ran Hankook Dynapro ATs while these set in the garage. For on road manner, you can't beat Dueler HTs IMHO.

Nitto always chunked on me and the KO2 is definitely a heavier tire, I think they are 3 ply sidewall, right?

I replaced the Dunlops with Michelin LTX A/T2s within a few days after buying our LC. We have made multiple trips across the mountains to Denver during blizzards and haven't ever had any slippage when icy/hard-packed. The Michelins are quiet and the truck handles/steers better than the Dunlops.

Rick-

What size AT/2s did you install, I didn’t think those came in OEM. Thanks

275/65 R18. About 1/2" narrower than the stock Dunlops. These are Tundra take-offs, complete with the Tundra TRD wheels (black & silver). Lots of them on Craig's List/Facebook Marketplace around here.

I also have a set of Tundra Rock Warrior wheels that will get mounted with summer off-rod tires this spring.

I'm really surprised to read this because I have new KO2s as well, and they are virtually silent. Even with the window down you can't really hear them. I've had them in the 37" variety on a Jeep, and they were also extremely quiet and far quieter than the Duratracs they replaced (which only had about 1k miles on them when I upsized).

Got to understand the guy that didn’t like them drove around without any stereo on just dead quiet in the car so this guy probably doesn’t like any kind of noise.

I finally got my KO2s today, noticed a small increase in noise, but nothing major. I think in comparison to the stock Dunlops, which were very quiet, these are a bit noisier.
Love the look. My kids noticed it too, they wanted to go off-roading after pickup from school :-)

During my first drive on them I was thinking what did I just do? After a week I thought it would be better to return them especially after my 200mi drives the other day. At 80mph, I could clearly hear them, even with the stereo on, and because this is my road trip car, I couldn't keep with them even if they didn't come with the return policy as I also have the original set of 21" wheel at home. So it would have been just a waste of money. I couldn't tolerate them so I'm happier to admit that I made a mistake than kid myself. My recommendations for others is that try them first, then decide for yourselves.

What PSI did they put in them?
I ask because when I installed KO2s the shop set them at an outrageously-high 55PSI. Felt like driving a Flintstone mobile...until I lowered it to the correct pressures.

Wondering if your initial impressions might have been skewed due to a similar factor...because KO2’s are not all that heavy for a real AT, and should have been pretty quiet—especially when brand new.

41PSI..... Is it possible that I got a bad set?

I'd be surprised that a set could be so bad as a group of 4 that it would make way more racket.

KO2's are considered a very quiet AT, and not heavy.

Did you bump up to a size well over stock? Like 33"? Otherwise, I can't imagine you'd see a major drop in acceleration, etc.
