Thinking about buying a turndown or mandrel bend to have a local shop weld in in place of the resonator. Does anyone have any opinions on what material and gauge pipe should be used when adding pipe to the factory exhaust?
What are the material specs on the factory exhaust?

Thanks for your wisdom.

just did this. use same size pipe or larger. doesn't matter if mandrel. $20 to have my shop do it.

I was just talking hypothetically with my friends about keeping stock exhaust, while dropping the resonator. Will be watching thread closely.

Truck is getting the tailpipe rerouted and a Flowmaster Super 50 installed right now. Won't be able to help you with the stock muffler less the resonator question...

Offset inlet and outlet on the new muffler?

Funny you ask this. I ordered a center-center muffler based on some reading on the forum here, only to discover that the factory muffler is center-offset. The exhaust shop is certain they can fit it, but it has resulted in far more work than it would have otherwise (on their dime, not mine, long story). I will be certain to post up the results.

Certainly someone has tried this...right??

How does it sound if you delete the resonator?
So I cut the resonator off because it got beat up when wheeling. It has been about 5 days now since I did it. Installed a turndown in the place of the resonator. The only thing I noticed is on cold starts it is a little bit louder but once warm sounds the same to me. I don't notice any additional noise on the highway from the driver seat. Really the only time i can hear a difference is at idle outside the vehicle. Nothing else has changed IMO. The motor is stock with stock air box no snorkel. As a side note, I am running aggressive MT tires.

Flowmaster Super 50 sounds great. You can hear that it sounds different in the cab, but it is definitely not "noticeable." My roofrack makes more noise.
Idling is totally civilized, but sounds deep and rumbly. Under throttle it sounds burly, but again, totally civilized.
Haven't noticed any positive or negative seat of the pants performance changes.

Can't help with stock question either. Had a Magnaflow 18" installed and at first kept the resonator, wasn't good enough for me. The next week had the resonator removed keeping the new straight pipe exiting at normal location. Now sounds amazing and not like a typical LX :). Before everything was super quiet, could hardly hear engine noise. Now it's cool to hear the tranny shifts through the exhaust! Words like deep, rumbly, and burly that @Hayes used fits perfect for me as well.

Looks like there are 15 or so part numbers for the Super 50. Do you know which one you have?

Same type question I just posed to @Hayes... Do you know the magnaflow part number? I'm leaning this direction instead of DT now.

2.25" pipe
I've got the center in center out model, #52455.
BUT, I would recommend the center in offset out or offset in offset out models 52457 and 52458, respectively. A quick measure of the factory muffler in/out offset would point you at the right one. This will make the install much simpler. Ask me how I know.

@92LXAZ and @Hayes - would you all be willing to upload a video so we can hear how these mufflers sound? Thanks in advance!

Same here, will try.

And here it is. The finest piece of cinematography and audio engineering ever shown on MUD.
I used my phone (Samsung S3).
There is a little bit of wind noise, and you won't hear anything from the exhaust if you're listening from a mobile phone speaker--use headphones or real speakers. Also note that one position is basically right below the tailpipe.
I will set the camera to record some of my drive home so you can hear what it's like when you're actually driving (it's loudest when accelerating).

@Hayes that sounds great! This is what I'm looking for, some rumble but not too much noise inside. Looking forward to hearing @92LXAZ as well. Thanks guys.
