I had the "premium" double-DIN head unit in my '92 4Runner, I assume this is the same one. I believe they also put them in the Cruisers in that same vintage.
[edit]It looked like this:
Yes, the system CAN have a 4-digit security code enabled, but it is optional. They come from the factory without any code preset, it's up to the owner to set the code, all the instructions are in the glovebox manual, it's a rather complicated sequence of buttons you have to push. If the code is set and you disconnect the backup power, once power is restored you have (IIRC) 3 tries to re-enter the code, and then the unit goes totally dead. You have to send it out to an authorized repair place to get the code wiped out out of the internal EPROM so it will come back to life. Generally it's not worth it if that happens, especially when you consider you can get much better units for less than the repair cost on
eBay or craigslist.
If the unit is working now and you have access to an Owner's Manual, check to see if any code is preset. The final test would be to disconnect the battery for a few mins, then reconnect and see if it is still usable.
Be advised, these units are known for failing before their time, usually it's the belts and clutches in the CD player. They are not worth fixing at that point, I went thru 2 of them, that was back in 1999-2000. I'm surprised that yours still works, test the CD player, make sure it ejects CDs.
