Was using my FIL's Stihl 180 yesterday and it failed to shut down when I moved the lever to turn it off. Pulling the cover I noticed that the contact on the rod had shifted to the left, actually the entire rod/contact assembly was shifted. In the photo the contact is in the correct position. I shoved the contact back into place but it continued to shift leftward with chainsaw usage. Is there a simple fix?

Your flat metal blade ground contact looks a bit bent to the right.

The grounding wire with the metal sleeve on it pulls out to the left. It is held in with radial tension. Just to the right of where the contact sits in the master control shaft is a boss sticking up with a "U" shaped groove that is the wire hold down. Make sure the black wire is pushed in in that location as well. On my computer screen it is about 1" to the right of the sleeve on the end.

This was the problem. The wire had popped out of the wire hold down. I like easy fixes. :)
