Guys,

Has anyone been affected with the sticky accelerator phenomenon that seems to be prevalent on higher mileage 80's? I have test driven many with 140/150/160K on them and they all seem to take much effort to push the pedal down to get the gas going. My 80 with 111K is starting to do this.

Is this an ejection issue? Transmission? Or simply something with the accelerator?

Any help is much appreciated...thanks in advance.

FJ55,

It might be the throttle cable. Search for archive posts by IdahoDoug for a good description of the problem and how to fix it.

Mine stuck a little and was fixed by cleaning out the throttle body. The butterfly valve was gunked up and would stick when first accelerating - made for a lot of punchy driving from stops. This was with 65k on the odo so it happens early but an easy fix -

Dirty injectors, fouled plugs, clogged air/fuel filters, stretched timing chain are a few main things that would rob power, so go through your check list.
