Anyone experience steering wheel vibrations in their GX/120? It's done it ever since we got it at 38K miles, but seems worse after new tires (Michelin LTX A/T 2's --stock size) and fresh alignment/ balance. Truck tracks straight. Has shimmy @ 50mph and again @70mph.

Thanks,
Justin

Balance issue

I would tend to agree, but there is evidence of a front end collision (That CarFax didn't report/catch [surprise]). It's under warranty for another 25K, so I'm going to take it to the dealer and let them worry about it.

Then I would check steering rack bushes and front end geometry Ito control arms and also suspension components, including bushes. Also check for binding pistons on brake callipers - we had a lot if issues with those in the UK!!

FWIW mine does something similar with Cooper STTs on it (2005 UK spec 120 'Prado')

I was also wondering about an out-of-round tyre - have you tried rotating front to back to check if that makes a difference? This can be so annoyingly time consuming to nail

I've never had vibration issues until I put A/T tires onto her a few months back. She drove smooth like butter with the Michelin Cross Terrains before I switched over but from what I hear on the CL forums, it would need a particular balance machine used instead of the typical ones at the tire shops.

Tires need to be balanced on a Hunter GSP Road Force Balancing machine with a Haweka lug-centric adapter.

I have a V8 4R with BFG's and there is not even a hint of vibration all the way to 120mph.

Could also be not enough castor dialed into the alignment assuming nothing's worn, bent, out of round or balance.

wow....do you work in the tire business?

No when I have my cars serviced I expect it to be done correctly.

The service-writers face is priceless when I drop that line noting that they were installed and balanced correctly from the get-go.

I'm a dealer's worst nightmare, an educated consumer.
