Whenever I'm driving, especially when going past 40 km my steering wheel begins to shake so to prevent the shaking I have it slightly leaning either left or right. I took it to get the wheel balance thinking that would prevent that and now I'm intending on making sure I get a wheel alignment done or if it's the wheel stabilizer or power steering fluid and wires that need to be looked at

could be your wheels, your tyres, your bearings, your tie rods, your relay rods...lots of things.

start with tyres and balance wheels.

did you just get it? happened all of a sudden? or slowly developed? may need a bit of history

I've had it for a couple of months now. The car on VX says it had a collision back in 2016 but the supporting documents don't provide much and I haven't looked at it because most days I stay 40 km and under. I've had people look at it but either someone didn't notice it or what because all they said was that there was an oil leak

I also did get my tires balanced yesterday however the problem persists

Hi
You probably have a 'Death Wobble'.
Lots of posts on that buzzword.

Technically it is a resonance swinging of multiple components in the front axle, made possible by too much play.
In many cases this is not caused by a single culprit, but as a combination of multiple parts that have each have a bit of play, which sums up and causes 'too much play altogether'.
Trigger may be an unbalanced mass, eg of a wheel.

In essence it comes down to:
- Check your entire front axle and steering gear.
- Start with the easy stuff: Check wheels for uneven wear, balance wheels, swap wheels rear to front, do wheel alignment/ check caster and toe, check wheel bearings for play, check steering gear and tierod ends for play, thighten suspension and shocks, stabilizer links, u-bolts and spring clamps if leafsprung.
- If that doesn't help: Get more serious with suspension and stabilizer bushings, swivel bearings..
Often the play is caused by worn bushes and tierods.
On modified / lifted rigs, caster and other geometry issues contribute to the effect.
Sometimes really the wheels are the culprit, despite all balancing, alignment and proper pressure. Changing to a different set of wheels (eg boroughed) helps the diagnosis.

You need to check thoroughly. Torque every bolt to spec, even those you can't imaging to come loose (eg pitman arm, steering box to frame bolts). Move things, if needed by pry bar and observe closely.
Good Luck Ralf

Check the preload on front wheel bearings.
Lift front tires off of the ground and give them a heavy 3/9 and 6/12 o'clock test.
If any looseness is detected tighten things up.
I run 20ft pounds on the inner nut as opposed to the factory specs. This really helps if you are running big tires.
Great info above as well.

Just a thought but it happen to me when I brought my troopy home when I bought it.
The truck sat for a while before selling it with a flat tire. My guess is water got inside tire with rain. Was a front tire and it was scarring, stop at a mechanic and couldn’t figure out what it was, had 500km to do oups!
When I finally remove the tire from rim, was almost half full lol

Yep, had that with a rental vehicle. They must have had condensation in their compressor lines at the rentals shop and blew the water in.
But @maliahad the wheels balanced already, he said in post 1.
Any news on the diagnosis, though?
Cheers Ralf
