The steering on my 87' JDM BJ70 is causing me some concern after being parked all winter. Yesterday turning a tight highway corner at 90 km/h I was moving the steering wheel but the vehicle was not turning? Afterwards the steering wheel position returned correctly to center. Normal steering afterwards. Last fall driving on an unserviced road (goat trail) the drivers side tire fell through the road into a 4 ft deep crevice, the shackle flipped and put some pressure on the arm from the steering box, the weight of the truck was on the driver's side leaf leaf spring. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it or not? The steering box is adjusted all the way to remove steering play. Has anyone experienced this before? steering box?

Steering box should never have to be adjusted all the way, it can cause binding. If it is so worn out and needing that kind of adjustment, it should be repaired or replaced.

Check your linkages, trunion bearings, tires, steering arms etc.

DO NOT drive a vehicle that has questionable steering !!!

Everything underneath appears good & tight. linkages, steering arm, etc. I adjusted the steering play when the truck was first bought 2 years ago and havn't noticed any binding in that time. I could try backing it off a bit. If I'm looking at a rebuilt steering box are there shops in BC that can rebuild for a reasonable price?

I should also mention that when I grab the steering shaft above where it enters the steering box in the engine compartment there is play. Everything else is tight, the steering box shouldn't have 3/4-1" of play should it?
