I am trying to figure out what parts I am going to need for my 1967 FJ45. The previous owner did what looks like a hack job of a power steering conversion, and I'd like to go back to Toyota manual steering. I've got a guy locally that has the column, wheel and steering box out of a '72 FJ40. I'm curious if that will work, and what else I will need?

I plan on taking the Saginaw box off the front frame and patching that up. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Not exactly. Read on.

I had a similar dilemma with my swb resto. It came to me without any steering box pedestal, as the Saginaw had been started. Luckily, not completed. Having seen @Cruzilla rip the pedestal in half on the Rubicon (mind you he was running 35s at the time) I wasn't thrilled with the full resto idea of installing the OE setup.

I went with the '67 and newer pedestal like you are contemplating. It is not a good fit with the fenderwell opening. As I did not know this while I was in the middle of a frame off, I did not adjust the fender to compensate.

In the intervening years I bought and wheeled the piss out of my lwb45 with the early pedestal before doing my Saginaw. I worried about that pedestal the whole time, but it never failed.

Sooooooo, if you don't mind adjusting the fenderwell opening, you can use the '72.

Best

Thanks Mark, I was hoping you'd respond to my thread :bounce:

You wouldn't happen to have the correct '67 (or other appropriate years) I'd need to do this without modifications would you?

I have one rebuilt early box, along with pedestals. Please leave VM at shop and I'll call you back as soon as I can.
