Our 1988 FJ62 has been leaking oil from the steering gearbox for the last 6 months or so. We are about to send our daughter off to college in this vehicle and I am not sure when the repair should be addressed. A new gearbox runs from $2000-2800 plus labor. Are there any rebuild options, are there any sources for new gearboxes, what have you guys experienced - any suggestions?

I suggest you send me the $2000 and I'll send you back a rebuilt gearbox. :) Seriosly though... if you dont want any down time you can pick up a used one for about $150ish and then send it to West Texas offroad and they rebuild for much much cheaper. Then just swap out the units and resell yours for $100 or so. Swapping the boxes is a pain but not rocket science by any means...

If you think you are ever going to have big tires on your rig, go ahead and ask West Texas to port your box for ram assist. It's there if you ever need/want it, and it doesn't hurt anything if you don't.

The overhaul kit from Toyota is only about $ 130.00 plus shop time is 4hrs... no big deal to do...

I've read the FSM in detail. I'd say that rebuilding the steering gear box qualifies as a big deal. Lots of SST's and precise measurements.

I've had two boxes leak at the input shaft seal. On the first one, I pulled the whole box and made some spanner wrenches to set the locknut. For the second one, I was able to change the oring with the box on the truck. The oring was about $7 from the dealer.

You guys are great. I appreciate hearing your experiences and your input greatly! Since I am not so handy with the tools, I will likely try to find someone to do the rebuild for me. In listening to you, I was surprised my local Toyota service department did not offer to rebuild the steering gearbox - only offered a new replacement. I sent a message to West Texas Offroad to find out if they can rebuild, how long it will take and how much it will cost, hopefully I will hear back from them after the Christmas holidays. Thanks again and have a great Christmas!

old thread, but I believe in reviving over starting a new more confusing one...

my steering wheel has 9/16"-5/8" play measured where the arm comes off the center part of the steering wheel, on my 1988 FJ62,

I thought it was bad ujoints, but after tracking it down it appears the play is in the gear box, I have tightened the adjuster but that does not take the play out of it, that just makes the steering tighter,,,

are there any options on the rebuilding?
the toyodiy.com sight says a new gear box is 3574.46$
the power steering worm kit is 484.76
the gasket kit ranges from around 95-154

mine is not leaking it is just sloppy steering, I think the max the FSM says is ok is around 1/2" , but I dont know where they are taking the measurement from, can anyone post that info?
cruiserparts.net has used but as is and I dont want to buy one that might have the same

and I just sold my back up thinking "oh I wont ever need this...."

I still would agree with statements above and recommend West Texas to rebuild it. If you can't have your cruiser down for a few weeks, then call them and ask if they have any spare ones or find a old one to buy and have it rebuilt. I replaced everything in my steering and it wasn't until tightening up the drag link and a rebuilt box from West Texas till it did the trick. Just make sure the bronze seats that make contact with the lines going into the box are replaced or good when you change it.
