i am trying to put a 76 model colum in my 72 has anyone done this or is it a mistake.while i am on the process of going saginaw. I an not sure how to handle the difference at the firewall. Reason i got blinker and horn problems. plus i just dont like the key in the dash.
I am currently attempting an 82 FJ40 column install in my 69 FJ40. The mounting part of it is pretty straight forward. Cut a template out of 14 ga. that matches the firewall penetration and cut a hole in the template that matches the od of the new column. Tack weld in place.
The problem that I am having is that the rear turn signals on the 69 are combined with the brakes. On the later 40s, the brake and turn are separate circuits. The later turn signal switch has a single wire coming out that provides power to all left or all right signals. The brake circuit is separate. What this means is to wire it in, the front turn signals are going to come on bright when you hit the brakes. I'm trying to figure out a way to get a separate contact at the switch that I can run the rear brake and turn signals from.
More stuff HERE regarding mini truck and other stuff.
And there is one more that I thought I had marked but I don't see it right now. A guy cut the section of firewall out and welded in a later model section.
I plan on doing it when I do my mini truck swap on a custom frame off I am working on. I am going to make a plate that will act as a flange on the newer column and bolt to the original bolt holes on the early model body. At least that is the plan in my head.
If you are going to do it with a saginaw conversion, get or make the plate that goes on the fire wall and treat the end of the column as you would an early model.
