Received my rebuilt Steering gearbox from West Texas Off road. Do they ship it dry?

Can't find by searching, but is the lube in the steering box the same as the P/S pump, i.e. Dextron?

FSM says to use 80w-90 gear oil...

And if it is gear oil, how and where do you fill it ? ? One of the cover bolt holes?

I'm perplexed. (again).

What year is it? If you have power steering, the only lube is the ATF coming from the PS pump. That's what the pump is for. Ask me how I know...I asked the same question when I took my box off before I sent it to West Texas Off Road.

The FSM is confusing- it doesn't say the gear oil only goes in the non-power steering boxes.

Hope your box works well.

It's a 5/85 FJ60 ...

So with P/S = ATF only ?

Box looks great and seems smooth -- WTOR does nice work!

give us a before and after driving impressions, i'm thinking about sending mine in :hhmm:

I recently installed my rebuilt one, and it made a HUGE difference. basically the shaft had half a revolution slack in it before, and now it is tight. together with new tie rod ends, suddenly the truck runs straight and tight, and immediately responds to the steering wheel. almost boring :D

one of the best things I did to it so far.

how much was it?

yes ATF

Gear oil is for manual steering boxes

You don't need to fill the box, though. Once you hook it up to the pump, just cycle the steering with the motor off and wheels off the ground, and it will prime and fill itself with fluid. Just make sure to keep the resivoir full while you do this.
