I'm replacing the brake pads and drums on my 74 fj40. I have the new pads on but I can fit the hub over them. I try to adjust the wheel cylinders in a little, cause I'm figuring they were probably all the way out, but I only get about a quarter turn before it stops. I've tried walking the adjuster cog forward with a chisle and mallet but still nothing. I don't want to bang it too hard and bust up the cylinder. How far is the wheel cylinder supposed to be able to turn? Should I take the new pads off and try to adjust the cylinders down without them?

sounds like new wheel cylinders are in order. Try CDan, MAF or CCoT.

Pads are for disk brakes; shoes are for drums.

You have to be able to adjust the brakes. Remove the adjuster from the cylinder and chuck it in a vise and see if you can get it to turn with vise grips and heat. If you get it out, reassemble it with "antisieze" and you should be good to go. If you can't get it out, get a new cylinder or replace them all.

Ideally, you should get the new shoes "arced" to fit your drum diameter; otherwise they may be noisy or not work well until they wear in.

If you are talking about the brake drum...here is a link for you. I could not adjust the wheel cylinders...post #22 for pics. If you remove a cylinder you have to bleed the brakes.

How do you "arch" brake shoes? Can I do this myself?
