Starting problems '86 HJ60

Hello,

First of all, I am very glad to have discovered this forum, as we highly appreciate this kind of on-line assistance. Keep up the good work!

My wife and I own a '86 HJ60 "G" series LandCruiser here in Suriname (South-America), and we use it as a daily driver and rally vehicle (we do lots of organized 4x4 navigational rallies here in the rainforest and savannah's). The 220K (km) "Big Toy" has been a very reliable and capable car so far, but we have recently been experiencing starting problems. When the contact is switched on, lots of times no warning lights come on, and no electricals (fan, ...) are working. However, swinging the engine is possible, but after starting and the key again in 'on' position, the engine stalls immediately. I have checked already the starting switch and get 24 V on the appropriate contacts when the key is in the different positions. Furthermore I cleaned start and glow relay, but with no use.

Is there anybody who has experienced the same or similar problems, and has found a solution to this? As we are kind of remote and technical expertise is not really available here in Suriname, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, first, welcome.
Probably this post should be moved to the diesel forums here, you will get a lot more responses that way. Maybe a moderator can help out.

Could you describe your symptoms a bit better? So you turn the key, then no lights come on, but you can still turn the starter, but it won't run, correct?
This sounds exactly like a problem with the engine fuse. have you checked in your fuse panel if this one is still ok?
Another possiility is low oil pressure, this should shut the engine down, but you should not have any problems with the lights then, so it is unlikely.
third, it could be the EDIC relay (also called fuel control relay). It is behind the right side kick panel, and can fail, causing exactly your symptoms. often it is just grounded badly, so either cleaning up the attachment bolts (it grounds through those), or laying another ground from the engine might help.

But to answer your question: actually, the starter engine will engage when the key is in 'start' position and the diesel starts to run too, but the diesel quits as soon the key is switched back to the 'on ' position (I refer to this position as the normal key position when driving). It seems that the mechanicals are all OK, but the electricals refuse to cooperate. The fuses were also OK as far I could check, but for sure I will measure them again.

But the EDIC relay is something I overlooked, as I was not aware of the existance of this relay. You indicate it to be located behind the right side kick panel, is that below the dashboard, or do I have to look elsewhere?

Too bad the fuses are good. Your symptoms sound exactly like a blown engine fuse-that would have been a simple fix.

Yes, the relay would be below the dash, on the right side of the truck, the panel in front of the front door. the panel is held in there by 2 screws. You can take it out and then youll see the relay.
When the engine shuts down after start up, does this relay click? do you hear a click from that general area?

Jan,

Over the weekend, I cleaned about all relays and fuse contacts I could find, and so far the starting problems were resolved.

For the EDIC relay, I have found 2 relays right of the glovebox (see picture), and another relay (?) under the hood (see other picture).

I did not check relays behind the kick panel, as my 24-12 V converter is installed on that panel, and it is a job to remove it. However, I can't remember that I have seen a relay on that spot when I installed the converter, and I never heard any click from that area too.

I will monitor the starting for some time, and keep you posted on the results of my cleaning action.
