Wanted to get other's opinion of a symptom that my 62 has. Periodically when I turn the ignition key the starter will not crank at all. I can typcially shift it into Nuetral and it will start normally. Most of the time it happens when the truck is warm. Just this morning when I started it (cold, first start of the day) there was a loud whirling noise (almost like the starter kept spinning if that is possible?) and when I shifted into drive the engine died. Upon immeditaly re-starting, it ran fine. My thought is to replace the starter and power cables since I'm already there. Any other thoughts?

Check all your connections. Once you verify the starter is the problem (which it sounds like) just get a starter rebuild kit from Toyota....includes contacts AND plunger (important part). Cheap, quick, long lasting & easy fix.

Power cables??

You mean cables from battery to other things, or spark plug wires, or... ?

Thanks for the feed back! I have some additional news unfortunatly that may change things. I was trying to start it again and all the dash lights went out. I noticed a bit of white smoke coming from under the hood on the passenger side. When I took a look at it one of the small wires going into the plastic connector on the positive side of the battery was separated. I think this is the fusible link? Anyways, soldered it back together and got it to start again. The next time it smoked again and the same wire separated.

Questions, is this the fusible link and why did it do that? Should I replace anything else besides the fusible link? Guess I'm on the line with Cruiser Dan tomorrow morning, love that guy!

Sorry, should have been more specific. I was thinking of replacing the postive and negative cables and also doing the mod with running a postive 4 gauge straight to the alternator. Just want to do some prevantive maintenance and get all the weak links while I'm in there.

Neutral start switch or whatever it is.

Talked with Cruiser Dan this morning and ordered one of those along with the fusible link. Man, that neutral start switch is spendy!:crybaby:

My FJ62 has 318,000 miles on it and Dan thought possibly the fusible link failed due to age or corrosion from the battery. There is no noticeble affects of corrosion, but it doesn't mean that at some point the battery was corroded and traveleld into the wire's conduit. Prior to me installing the new fusible link, is there anything that I should look for or trouble shoot?

Thanks again for everyone's input, really appreciate it!

Yeah, I had to replace my NSS and it hurts! Good news is it solved my intermittent starting issues until I the tranny seized.
