Trying to document consensus on if the 200 starter is prone to failure. If you had a failure, please document year and miles of vehicle.

2008 with 190k. Still working when it was replaced preemptively.

09 with over 250k thinking about replacing with alternator for preventative maintenance.

I recently polled on common repairs and included the starter.

Suggest breaking down the failure at over 100 k group into quartiles after you get more data.

mine is a 2013 with 157k and original starter but I carry one in the truck just in case. A trail repair would be a challenge. I carry it mostly just to make a shop repair easier when traveling and not have to wait to get the part. Suggest carrying exhaust manifold gasket and FSM procedure too as most general repair shops will not have ever seen a 200.

08 starter went out at 150k. No warning.

‘10 with 170k on the odometer. Went from starting fine to not working in one day. According to my shop, it’s a total pain in the rear to replace as the passenger side exhaust manifold has to be removed along with the associated exhaust. New starter is smaller than old one. Starts good now! Pics for fun!

2009 LC about 165K. I am replacing mine as maintenance next weekend.

No idea why they decided place the starter in the valley? It really turns something that should be a simple job into a full day. You have to tear off the entire top of the motor to get to it. Maybe they put it there so after 10 years you have to vacuum out the mice and rat nests? No idea?

The only thing that would come out of replacing one on the trail would be a nightmare story to tell around the campfire. You and anyone you are with just lost a day. And make sure you have a well stocked tool kit with all sorts of funky ratchet setups to get to a few tricky bolts.

Would you mind sharing what funky tools you had to acquire to get the job done? Would like to know so I can stock my toolkit accordingly for insurance.

Top? Thought access was side through passenger fender and from bottom. Once heat shield and exhaust manifold is out aren’t you looking at it from the side?

Still a huge PITA.
