Need help: encountered the no-start issue last night after work. 2008 LX570 114K, it’s stuck in my work parking lot about 2 miles from home, is there any way I can get it home without a tow?

Try this: from an old post sorry don’t remember who. But I keep it in my notes

I was able to "Jumper" my old starter by connecting two leads of jumper cables to a long screwdriver touching the braided copper wire from the solenoid to the starter. it took a couple trys, but finally worked. If you are in a jam and get the dreaded starter,"Click" remove the heat shield and have someone push the starter button. when you hear the relay energize, clamp the jumper-cable to the screwdriver and you can start the truck.

Thanks, I’ll likely go this route

I haven't done it myself, but here is the info I have saved in my notes on my phone . I do carry the 24" screwdriver, jumper cables, and electric tape in my truck at all times. I got them all at harbor Freight, the

place the end of your insulated screwdriver on the bolt where the cable attaches to the solenoid.PNG
only place I found with such a super long screwdriver

For those of you who may experience a warning "click" from your starter here's a little trick I thought of to get you home. My starter gave me a warning about 8 months ago, one time, then it worked without an issue till last week. I was visiting a friend in Ohio when it just decided to stop working. Because it just did it one time I was hoping it was just a fluke, that's what I get for hoping, and not doing. So there I was 300 miles from home when a family emergency happens and I have to get home...CLICK!

Check the relay, terminals, battery, all in good condition, has to be the solenoid, I'm stuck. I crawl under the truck and discover that the starter is buried besides the exhaust manifold and pipe. Not an easy repair, even if I had a spare starter. I removed the bottom two 10mm bolts that hold the starter heat shield and move it as far as I can outta the way. Shining a light up at the solenoid I discover a nice shiny copper bulls-eye where a long handled screwdriver can make contact.

Off to Wallys I go and buy some cheap 10 gauge jumper cables and a 14" or so screwdriver. Cutting off both ends of the cable, I soldered one end to the screwdriver using both cables. Then I taped the entire thing all the way to the end leaving just the very end open to make contact with the copper terminal on the solenoid. This is not a welding rod so I tape it real well. The other end I wrap tight and solder also. Total cost about $20. Sure beats a $120 tow.

On the 5.7 when the starter is engaged the solenoid is energized for about 3 seconds or till the motor starts. So, have someone in the truck to tap the key to start while you hold the screwdriver to the copper bulls-eye. I used a vise grip to hold the wire end to the + battery terminal. If you have a third person I would make contact with the starter first then have them contact the battery after the solenoid clicks the starter pinion forward. Less arching at the starter will help keep the wiring healthy longer.

gents I really appreciate all the replies, dealer quoted me $700 OTD for the tow and work, and said they could get it done today. so i had to take it. truly appreciate the replies, and this helpful bunch of folks. all of the other threads on the starter helped my decision immensely as well. stay muddy!

Dang that's a loooooow price! I just asked last week and got quoted a bit over $1100. And that's a shop that discounts our local club members. Jeez. That's at a Lexus or Toyota dealer? Crazy they'd charge that little, the by the book method any dealer would follow is removing the exhaust manifold which is why the labor on that job is usually so crazy. Approx $250 starter, plus gaskets and possible hardware too.

Starter is $200 retail. i just bought one from a lexus dealer . . .

i doubt they are removing the manifold, but I'll ask when I pick it up. it was $275 ish starter, plus 3 hrs @ $140, and i got a 10% discount which ate tax. Labor time/hr seemed high but Toyota is 2 miles away and my lexus dealer is 180 miles. FWIW I use this dealer all the time for menial stuff, servicing, inspections, small parts, etc. They are good folks and do have a great reputation here in town.

They are out there for less than $200.
yes. mine was $172 from EB Toyota Parts. Still $700 is good for tow, starter and labor. I was intending to do this myself but it doesn't look fun. My dealer quoted 3 hours which seems low to me but I may just have them do it for that. They will install the one I purchased.

$172!?!? Wow when I replaced my starter a year and a half ago, the cheapest one I could find was around $300. I ended up getting a rebuilt denso off RockAuto for about $150. It looked brand new and is the updated smaller starter. You guys are getting the updated smaller one right?

Yeah I paid only $170 from Larry H Miller Toyota online just over a year ago. Maybe I should shop around on labor I was basically told it was a full day job
