so I started working on the trailer for the Oct trip. got a lot done in the last 2 days. the swing out rear will have a jerry can holder and a storage box. the inside of it will have a fold down table. here's some mock up pics:

with the bumper mocked up too-

with the bumper part welded in and a spacer for the swing out part-

and here's the rack part to be added to the swing out. jerry can mount on the right, other part is the top of the box storage.

next part is to add a storage area to the tongue. I can mount a tool box like these-

I have some sheet metal to make a huge box similar to the second one above, just need some 1" angle for the frame and sheet for the lid and bottom.

OR, I have a monster tool box that came in my truck. it's something like 60"x22" and 30" high. that one will limit how far I can jackknife the trailer backing up, but has the highest capacity and is nearly free(some 1" square tubing for the mount). I will have to transfer it back and forth when I use the trailer, but that is rare.

For an offroad trailer, I would not limit your jack knife potential. Go for the smaller box.

Given that tongue box is made of Polymer and your trailer sits in the sun, make sure that it is UV stable. Looks good dude.

the trailer is actually stored out of the sun. so no problem there.
I'm eliminating the big box idea for the thoughts of hanging it up on rocks. I have trail rash on the trailer front edges at chest level. the big box is as wide as the trailer itself. I don't want to damage an expensive tool box.
I have to wait for Tuesday to find out the prices of aluminum to make a box myself. that is where I'm leaning for now.

Another thought...you're pulling a trailer, how much crap are you bringing that necessitates the trailer have another storage area?

Rear swingout is cool for extra gas or a leaking cooler.

I'm totally tapped out for space. it REALLY needs the extra storage. no gear can fit in the cruiser with wife, 2 kids and a dog. there's isn't much unnecessaries in there.

I'd go look at Surplus City for a cheap storage box, they have a bunch of military boxes big and small.....email sent with pictures;)

those would work well for the swing out. I wonder what dimensions some of those have...I may have to stop by there.

for the tongue box, I bought diamond plate this morning. stand by for pics after I work on it today.

one of the two surplus store on Central has TONS of ammo cans of various sizes.

I've got more diamond plate than I know what to do with now. guess I'll continue with the current plan and box it in with diamond plate. front tool box will be diamond plate. it is still off being sheared and bent. more work to come Saturday (and pics).

got some work done yesterday. bent the end mounts and mocked it up. floor is cut and just needs final trim/fitting.

a guy I work with that was on my crew when I built the 40 said something similar. he had suggested back then some chrome additions and I said, "chrome don't get you home". he'll never let that one go now...

I got the hinge in today. anyone have a press or the ability to press in bearing races? looks like they need to go down inside the outer hinge a little bit.

today's work, finshed up the frame work for the swing out jerry can holder and storage box.
