I've just finished a tune up hoping that it would take care of the stalling issue on my 1983 fj60. The problem is intermittent, she runs great one minute and then won't stay running the next. I have to fan the gas pedal to keep it running and then out of the blue she runs great again. Has anybody had a simular problem, and if so how did you fix it?????? Thanks for your help........ I had a similar problem that turned out to be bad gas. I dumped some dry fuel additive in and it took care of the problem. Sounds obvious but make sure the gas cap is on tight too

EGR maybe? i had kind of a similar problem and thats what it turned out to be.

this doesn't have to do with the EGR but If you let your foot off the gas does it stall?

check the wire coming off the carb, i think it has a green plug, clean the connections, this cured my intermittent stalling and super rough idle.

Spray carb cleaner around the base of the carb, & then the top of the intake manifold where it meets the head, with the engine warmed up & running.

If the RPMs pick up, you have THE INTAKE LEAK.

There are three types of FJs - those that have THE INTAKE LEAK, & those that are going to have THE INTAKE LEAK, & those that have THE INTAKE LEAK fixed.

ground the, GROUND wire to the frame from that plug...had the same problem and that fixed it.

Try plugging the vacuum lines to the EGR, see if it runs better. No it's not a fix but it might help you isolate the problem. Mine was doing the same thing for a couple of months. Got a wild hair one day and plugged the EGR and it has run 10x better since. Still have to find what is wrong in the EGR system but atleast I have a direction to look, before I was stumped.

SOB if it's not one thing it's another. I will take all of this info into consideration, and pray it's one of the above problems. I just got done doing the brake master cylinder and everything was working great. Now my front calipers are sticking, should be done with the calipers today. Can we say can o worms!!!!!!!!!

I replaced the intake manifold gasket last year. You are right they all leak. All the heat coming off the exhaust manifold goes right up to the intake. Bad design I guess

I feel your pain, I replaced the brake booster and new rotors/pads 2 months ago and now my calipers need to be rebuilt as well. You're right, if it is not one thing it is another. LC's are a labor of love.

This is exact problem I have been battling with the dealer since September.
Look in float bowl and see if gas is half way up window with truck running.
I got new carb, rebuilt manifolds, new fuel pump, fuel filter, egr valve and air rail and it STILL "starved for gas" and cut out at 1800-2500 rpm. They finally adusted some float thing that brought that constant gas level up and now it runs right again.
oh well the grey money monster is almost brand new under the hood :D

I'm thinking that this might be the same issue that I am having. I will check it out tonight after work. I have checked everything that people mentioned up top and still have the problem. My wife calls my truck the brown bread box, for 2 reasons. 1. it looks like a big bread box. 2. It is were all of our extra bread goes!!!!!!!!
