Hi guys, I'm staging tools for my brake upgrade next week and I realized I don't have the SST axle nut wrench for the rear of my 97 FZJ80.

Calling the local dealership about the part got me a referral to their tool supplier, which got me a referral to THEIR supplier, who won't answer the phone lol.

I've tried to find a 12 point 2"socket on google to modify, but no dice- no one makes them. Am I looking for the correct size?

Does anyone here have an extra tool they no longer need and would be willing to sell?
 
Check with Mike I think he has one. I always just go by feel, Also The auto parts stores have a few sizes of cheap axle sockets for borrow.
Also, I am not super familiar with 80s but if its a funky 3 pin thing than a 6 point socket should work.
 
I believe we do have one in my garage. Not for sale but I don't see any reason why it couldn't be borrowed. Just let myself or Mike (yohavos) know.

What he's talking about is a 6 point 54mm hub socket.

Hi Mike, I PM'd jack already about it, just waiting to hear back.

I've already got a 54mm socket for the front, but I was under the impression that the three pronged oddball socket was necessary to remove the rear (or a slotted 2"socket that you make).

Am I off base about the rear axle SST? This isn't my first brake job, but its my first 80 brake job :)

Not sure I'm qualified to answer that... I haven't been that far into my rear axle. I thought it was the same as the front :o.

As far as brakes go, I did new rotors, calipers, and pads on the rear axle and didn't need anything special. It was super simple.

Are you doing something that requires you to go farther into the axle?

I'm just doing pads and rotors on the rear. I was under the impression that a separate specialty tool (that pronged alien probe socket) was required to get the bearing adjustment nut off for the rear axle. If its no different than the front I should be golden, as I already have the 54mm socket.
 
Well, cdan came thorough for me and the three prong socket is on the brown truck. Likely be here before my brake job next Saturday.

I figured that even if I could Jerry rig a socket to work, having a little bit of tool-porn in the trail bag would be nice. Too often I try to improvise, and figured this time if the correct part was available I'd actually do what was recommended by Mr. T

All that being said, I'm really just a filthy hillbilly at heart :D
 
You do your brakes yet?

I'm interested in hearing whether or not you needed the tool for em. I swear I did mine without it, but have been mulling over in my head since reading this whether or not I did something wrong :)
 
Rear Brake Job

I did PM on my parking and rear brake a week ago. The only special tool i used was BFH to get the rotors off. Hi Mike, you can have my Procomp when i get my H1 wheels and spacer from backstash:bounce:

You're going for the H1 adapter, huh!?

That's the plan. I've been looking for XML, but they really hard to come by. If the price for H1 wheels n adapter from backtash is the same as XML from War Tire in Fl, I'll go for H1.
 
Sorry for the slow reply, just got home from :wrench::wrench::wrench: all day at my brother's place.

We got his Rubicon's tranny pan and new skid plate drilled & installed properly, installed 4 shiny new cross drilled/slotted Powerstop rotors and ceramic pads on the Cruiser, cut/sculpted the harbor freight winch plate to the Cruiser frame rails, and re-clocked the winch control lever to clear the body.

We ran out of gas to finish the mount for the winch, so that will have to wait until next saturday when I will be replacing the torn rubber sway bar mount on the passenger side as well as installing a new set of extended brake lines, as my existing ones are in sad shape. Lots of activity in the garage these days!

Mike, In answer to your question about whether you were losing your mind about needing any special tools to do the rear brakes- no you were correct, no special tools. I now have a very expensive socket that I may never have need of, until such day as I do a complete service on the rear axle.

Not a problem at all. I'll ask my brother to shoot a couple pictures for me, as I left the plate at his place last night. Should have the pics posted by the end of the day.

I'll be working on it again this Saturday, so I'll try to document the process as best I can.
 
The plate has a U-shape to it, the rear of which interferes with fitting up flush to the frame. For my 80 we measured 12.5 inches off of center and then removed the vertical back of the plate on both sides with a sawzall. A flap disk was used to smooth things out.

The width is wider than the frame rails but I may end up keeping it that way and just build a little AC dryer protection off the side of it.

None of the existing holes line up to mount to my frame, so we will have to drill holes in the plate. The plate is set up to accept my winch without modification however, which is an HF Badlands 12K model.

The winch control lever was interfering with the truck body and needed to be re clocked for clearance. I had never done it before, but it was a pretty simple operation and I was done within 10 minutes.

My plans for mounting involve divorcing the solenoid box from the winch up high inside the engine bay, so I'll need to extend the power leads and waterproof the box as best I can with some RTV.

I'll update it next Saturday with some pictures once its all done.
