Alright guys, I have searched and have not come up with an answer yet, maybe my searching abilities are about as good as my mechanical abilities. I am having an issue with squeeling. I have not noticed it in 1ST gear but have in 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Maybe I just didn't go fast enough in 1st for it to happen. A little background on the vehicle. 78 FJ40, 2F, stock 4 speed, Saginaw Power Steering. Squeeling is pretty loud, annoying. Stops when I take it out of gear or goes away slowly if I let off the accelerator. I am getting ready to tow it from MO to NC. Leaving next weekend. Getting stationed at Ft Bragg, NC. What could it be? What damage could be done if not fixed right away. Not exactly sure how much time I will have to fix this in the upcoming months. It may have to wait till I get back from my Vacation to undesirable locations of the world. I appreciate everyones help with this.

Anyone...?

Only posting for a bump, and so you're not hanging in the wind here:D

Have you checked the fluids in your gear box and t-case? If you have the drain plugs with the magnets on them, you can see if there is any nasty metal stuff on the magnets.
My squealing/vibration turned out to be a bad bearing on the t-case rear output shaft- indicated by flakey metal on the magnet-unfortunately it was left too long so that I got a lot of wear on other things that needed replacement (plus I was running it with no gear oil:lol:)
My squealing would increase as the gears and speed went up too.

I am just floating an idea here so that someone better informed can shoot it down- but it wouldn't hurt either way to check the fluids and the drain plugs IMO.

Yeah, it squeels when I rev it up out of gear..I am getting ready to change the fluids in transmission, transfer case and diffs next week.

Loose belts squeal.

Problem is hearing the belt squeal in a 40.:D

But it sounds right.:hhmm:

LOL, Most of the time you can't hear anything while driving in a 40 other than wind and the engine. I appreciate everyones help..

Check your belts first, more than likely that is the culprit. (Post up if it isn't).

All the best with Ft Bragg, appreciate what your doing...:cheers:

Thanks and I sure will. Have some time tomorrrow. Selling my house and people are coming to look at it. I am going to spend some time at the autocraft shop on base and change all my fluids in the transmission, transfer and diffs. Will check the belts when I get done and post up if its the cause or not.

Squealing = Belts

Whining = Wife in Passenger Seat or cat trapped in engine compartment

j/k
