Howdy,

Iv'e got a squeal that occurs when travelling in a straight line or making a left hand turn. It goes away on left hand corners. This first occured about a month ago and I bought new brake pads figuring it was the brake pads. I pulled all four wheels and all of the pads had plenty of meat left. At the same time I also changed the oil and put a few squirts of grease into the knuckles. After about two days the squeal was gone. I figured either the knuckles were dry or I had a spontaneous mechanical fix. Now the squeal is back. It at first appeared to be brake related as applying the brake made the squeal go away but now it only changes pitch with pitch when the brake is applied. It sometimes goes away when travelling in a straight line and always when making a right turn. Any thoughts on the cause, stuck caliper?, would be appreciated.

fredguy,

In most cases it helps if we know what year your 80 is. While this problem might be seen in all 80s, it is always best if you let us know some information on your vehicle. Year, mileage, relevant options, and maintenance history. In this case we might want to know when you did the last full service on the front axle and what was done.

Could be the spindle bushing. Look for threads by landtank as Rick had a similar noise a few months ago.

Did you check the rear pads?

Hi,

Thanks for the responses. My cruiser is a 95 with ~90k miles, factory lockers, axle service done at 60k miles at local dealer by previous owner. This included repack front wheel bearing and replacement of trunion and inner axel seals, the parts installed were 04434-60051 gasket kit and 90310-35010 oil seals. I checked all four sets of pads and all still showed the slots in the pads. There's no sign of oil leakage on the birfs, which was the sign on my previous 60 that a repack was in order. I also checked the bearings for play and found none. New pads and a bearing repack as pm?

Regards,

Dave

Pull the wheel center caps on the fronts, and then the grease (hub) caps. You're now looking at the spline/drive plate interface. Does it look like this area is greased? I'm wondering if the spindle bushing area that is just inboard of this area is greased and if the mechanic did not grease what you can see it may be an indicator that he didn't grease the spindle bushing either. A lot of folks don't realize they're supposed to grease that bushing. That is my suspect.

It's a 3 minute check - let us know. But I would not do a PM as noted above.

Hi,

I pulled the cap on the axle tionight and while not packed with grease there was grease on the axle spines. I'm planning on doing the phh over the weekend any thoughts on what else to check while the wheel is off? Are there any easy checks for a stuck caliper?

Regards,

dave

Stuck calipers generally don't squeal. But I'd check the calipers to be sure the wear indicator isn't touching the rotor due to being bent during install, etc.
