Whats up everyone, i have an 01 LC with currently 107,000 miles. After driving for a while (anywhere from 15-30 minutes) i hear a loud squeaking noise from the rear brakes when i press the brake pedal, i also get quite a bit of brake fad and the truck begins to shake. I think it might be a frozen caliper :bang: i was told not to long ago by my mechanic that all my pads have a pretty good amount of life left and one of the rear calipers has already been replaced. I hear a similar squeaking noise when I'm backing up but goes away as soon as i drive forwards . If this helps: i have a 45 minute drive every day with pretty demanding conditions such as long hill descents and lots of braking before sharp turns (all of this at speeds around 50-60 mph). Despite the drive everything has been fine till one off road trip where conditions ended up being to icy and we had to back down the trail in reverse for about 10-15 minutes on the brakes the whole way and some occasional lock ups . What do you guys think? any temporary fix ideas are appreciated too.

How mechanically inclined are you? It's pretty easy to jack up the rear end, take off the tires and take a peek at the rear brakes to see what's going on. Floor jack, jack stands (1 for frame, 1 for axle), 22 mm socket for lug nuts, 14 mm for rear caliper, 8mm for dust shield, torque wrench to re-assemble (20 fl-lbf for the caliper bolts and 76 for the lugs), c-clamp or handle to move piston back and maybe a 17 mm open ended if things are siezed up on the sliding pins and you're good to go. You can at least test if they're just dirty (just finished cleaning a buncha crud out of mine that was causing a squeal), or see if they're siezed on the sliding pins or piston, or if you have a loose caliper mounting bolt. Tough to diagnose long distance. Easier to take a peek. Good luck and let us know.

Haha thanks, at the very least ill probably take the wheel off to see if its all corroded and dirty but as for disassembling the actual brake i would try but i dont have all the jacks and tools at the moment. I'll post an update once i get a chance to take a look but its predictably going to be in the single digits tomorrow.

 Sorry, living in Phoenix you forget that winter exists everywhere else.

So, I've got a similar issue. Rear brakes are squealing like pigs. I've checked the pads, plenty of material on both, nowhere near the wear indicators. Rotors aren't warped and have plenty of surface left. Surfaces are smooth, no noticeable marks. I've heard about the pads becoming glassed over and needing to be scuffed up, but upon inspection they feel rough, like a pad should. I'm wondering if I'm missing a backing plate or something. There's just one solid metal plate on the back of each brake pad.

EDIT - yeah, looking at the FSM there should be 2 anti-squeal shims in there. Hopefully they're cheap.

Any luck on the service bulletin, yournamehere? Any update on the fix, Trunk Monkey? Same problem showed up on my truck today...

My back brakes sqeal as well, the problem showed up a good while after I replaced my pads with stock ones. If you are missing the shims then you may consider the Wagner thermoquiet pads, those dont utilize the shims and they have a lifetime replacement so no need to pay for another set ever again.

I did pick up a can of stuff that you spray on the rotor and it is supposed to rescuff the pads. Ill give it a shot soon and report back.

Did you guys apply the brake quiet stuff?

Rear brake job is a breeze. Wish the front were the same. You can also just use the stock jack. Jack stands are cheap at less than $20 per pair. Good investment.

I used the brake quiet and did bed them in properly. The squeal seemed to worsen with the cold...
