I just got off the phone with Christo (ordered a new "relay rod") and asked for advice on springs. I'm running hvy/frt med/rr and have dropped an inch all around after mods. He recommended J's or a spacer for the front and 864's or heavies for the rear.

Q for Dave & Kevin:

Are the 864's the "heavy" heavies that you guys are running? If so, I think that is too heavy for my application.

What do you guys think?

Yep, we are both running them 864(SUPER HEAVIES). Only difference is , im running mine with a 1" MAF steel spacer out back and Kevin isn't. How much of a load do you carry outback? Let's start there.

Did he mean regular 863 (HEAVIES) outback? The 864's are for a real heavy rig.

He said 864's. I only have the Slee bumper/tire carrier and an airtank in the back. Occasionally, I'll run with my tent on top (no rack). But that's about it.

He also said I could run heavies (863's), but that it was "a tough call". He also suggested NOT going with J's in the rear. "Too tall".

He's right with the J's.

I would go with the 863's. Sounds like you don't need the 864's with your weight. I ran the 863's with the rear bumper/tire carrier and a small bit of gear in the back and it was perfect. It's when i started getting the drawers, fridge aux tank is when i needed to step up to the 864's.

Here's with teh 863's, no drawers, tank, tent etc yet.

here's another and i had the tent and rear tire carrier on it in this pic.

The other thing that you might consider too is... with 863's being so common.. you can just sell them if you ever need to upgrade. That's what i did. They sell so fast you don't really have to worry much.

J's front, heavies rear sound like the right call. I have a slight reverse rake right now, but that will change when I finally get a winch in that bumper. I suppose I could "fine tune" with spacers if need be.

I'm running OME 2.5" 850/863 heavies front and rear w/o spacers of any kind. ARB, dual battery and Warn M12000 winch up front. Kaymar bumper with tire carrier, fridge, drawer system loaded with crap and CO2 tank in the rear. Hanna sliders and Slee T-case plate in the middle. INTI rack up top.

I also have Airlift airbags in the rear coils for when I tow, but the 863's alone with the airbags w/o much pressure are fine with the weight I've got and it sounds like I have more than you have.

I don't profess to be nearly as heavy as our local resident modololic tho!

At one point I actually considered adding airbags for running with the tent. Hmmm, I should re-visit this. I like how your valves are right on the bumper. I could fill them up easy.

IIRC: Your sitting pretty level, aren't you Brent?

I really like the 63s. Been pretty heavily loaded and towing at the same time and they still give me around 2" of lift. Can't complain. And still reasonably comfortable when empty. Pretty versatile.

Pretty much stock look-level wise with the front slightly lower than the rear as far as I can tell. Realize, I've got all the weight described, then add a tongue heavy 3500-3800lb trailer. The airbags get a workout. With what you have the 863's alone should suffice IMHO.

Hey Reid

J's in the front are perfect

864's with just a bumper and a tire will vibrate the fillings out of your teeth!

Cant suggest a rear spring really cause i went from Stock to SUPER Heavy

p.s. the 864's arent even close to heavy enough for what i am carrying! :D

If you do go with "heavys" in the rear let me know....I may be interested in the mediums for my 4runner.

X2 (driving behind you can be a little scary looking:D)

Its not as bad now with the adjustable shocks. Are those medium springs 860's??

Pretty sure I'm going with J's/Heavies (w/ airbags like Brent).

Mark, I'll let you know. (yes, Meds are 860's)

Why not J's all around?

They make an 863J for the rear.

If it were me, and i were in your situation, i would do J's all around, that way if you do go heavier, you get a little more lift to compress so you dont look all saggy! :D

Kevin, won't he start getting vibes with putting in the J's? Not to mention possibly needing brakelines, caster plates instead of bushings etc?
Christo said the J's (up front) would get my height back. But J's in the rear would be too high and "could" cause vibes. I guess the J's are the same spring rate as the heavies.

I don't think I'll go any heavier. No drawers or frig for me. The most I may add back there is some kind of 'basket' on the bumper for fuel/water/cooler.

I got J's in the front with the CC bushings, drives awesome and ZERO vibes!

Unsure on the rear though!
