My 1st time painting.

Im picking up all the paint suplies today, and I just want to make sure I get the right stuff. The P.O. did some body work but then covered the entire fj in some walmart rattlecan red oxide primer. I was told by the local auto paint supplier to sand it down and use an epoxy primer/ sealer because he was worried about what paint they used in 71 and thought it might lift. My question is can I just sand it and use a builder if necessary or should I definitly use the epoxy primer.

I am no authority but having HAD a few cars painted in that condition, all the body shops and painters have mirrored that suggestion and said to get that rattlecan crap off before covering it with decent paint.

They told you correctly epoxy primer is the way or sandblast all the paint off. Napa sells some cool paint stripper you can go that route if ya wish.

I decided to grind all of the paint off down to the metal. Im actually finished with the tub, and 1 fender. Im glad I did decause I found 2-3 quarter size holes that were ground down and the bondoed over. Over all the body is in awesome shape for a 71..

Thanks for the help
