Ok, what's the trick? This sucker don't want to come off.

Pictures of bolt holes or pry points would be appreciated.

Are you sure you got all the bolts off? Take a really close look. There are a couple on the top (or at least there were on my '85) that were a serious PITA. Or they were a PITA until I enlarged that access hole in the floor to about twice its original size. I wouldn't recommend that approach unless you want to turn this into a parts rig, though. :D

Once the bolts are out, you should be able to pry from the top in a few places that will be obvious once you're looking at it. No pics, sorry.

Are you talking the rear 1/2 of the case (esentially the t-case cover), or actually removing the front case from the tranny?

I am talking about removing the T-case from the transmission!

Sorry, I should have been clearer.

Comes apart in two pieces...

Remove the rear section, then unbolt and remove the front from the tranny.

FSM covers it VERY WELL.

Good luck!

Oh man Poser, I didn't even think that maybe he was trying to take it off in one piece! Good catch!

Grendel, take a good look at your t-case. See the seam down the middle of it? There's a front half and a back half to the case.

DRAIN THE FLUID FIRST! Since this is a split case, you can't pull it off in one piece. This is guaranteed to be messy no matter what you do, and you don't need a gallon of gear oil dropping on your face while you're at it...

Undo all the bolts around the outside. Pull back the carpet and open the access hatch over the tranny/tcase to get at the top couple of bolts.

Next, pry the halves apart. They should separate pretty easily, leading us to the fun part. 90-weight and gears and bearings everywhere! :)

Once the guts are out, you'll see a few more bolts holding the front half of the case to the transmission. Take those out, and you can slide the front half off the tranny output shaft.

Good luck!

Do note: both on xfer "case" and front case to tranny, the bolt lengths do vary . . .

Also, as you pull back case away from front (that's still on tranny), other stuff will come off...like gears with sharp edges...BTDT

While it's apart 'consider' replacing bearings, seals, etc

Pete

I was not being flippant. This is a pretty big job to dive in to without a book in hand to tell you about stuff like this. The book knows a lot of stuff!
