sorry, this is kind of a repeat... i searched with no luck.
but i have to replace the seals in my t-case, at the output shafts to the drive flanges. i swamped it a while back and drove home unknowning. the puddle of gear oil under the truck made it clear.
the truck is an '81 bj42, with a split case. trying to determine if the seals can be swapped out without disassemlbing the case, by popping off the drive flanges... also couldn't find it in the fsm, but what is the torgue on the stake nut, is it meassured by bearing preload?
thanks,
eric.

Yes, the output flange seals can be changed without splitting the case. The torque values are at p. 4-25 of the 1980 chassis and body manual and are 102-122 ft-lbs. Red loctite is good here.

what type of seal remover would you recommend, a hook type? or screw in slide hammer variety? or does it matter?

I just use the hook type seal remover and pop them out. Clean up all the old seal material and put the new seal in to right depth. I put some grey RTV on the back of the washer behind the stake nut to stop any leaks along the spines, put loctite on the stake nut and torque the stake nut down.

thanks

Then remember to stake the nut.
