How much spindle wear is too much and need to be replaced. I went to repack the wheel bearing and I noticed some wear. When I rub over the area it is comparable to the height of 1.5 to 2 sheet of paper? Is this too much? Dan's dogs may have a good Thanksgiving this year.

How did the inner race of the bearing look where it contacted the spindle in that area?

It looked like new, I just chalked that up to being a very hard metal. On the other hand some of the rollers looke a little chewed up but no scoring.

Old guy trick to raise the surface area a little is to take a pin punch and hit slight dimple around the race area that the race rides onaobut 8-10 hits),( If i had to replace the spindles all the time most folks would rebel. Just about all the truck that do not get there bearing tighten on a 30 k miles schdule(most people) I repack at 30 k and tighen the bearing when they get loose (aoubt every 10-15k miles). the reason you want it tight is to help hold the inner race to the spindle, if too loose it will some time spin and wear the spindle more. Your description of your spindle is not that bad, you would dimple the race area 6-8 spots and it will hold the race ok, but it may take some foce to get the hub on, you will need to do your bearing preload real well or end up with a loose hub. later robbie

So dimple the race area in the spindle. The worn area is on the outer bearing so the hub should go on alright it will be the outer bearing that maybe a little tight getting on. So I guess I should tighten the lock nut pretty good to set the bearing than back off and set the preload. Am I understanding this correctly?
