When it is cold out (below 25 F) my speedometer will make a loud buzzing sound once I reach a certian speed and it slowly dies off as the car warms up. It has been doing this for a while but I'm just getting around to it now. Why does it do this and how can it be fixed?

Usually the problem is the speedo cable. I think you can get some fancy toyota speedo cable lube and take it apart and lube it up, but I read that a while ago...

One way to figure out if it's the cable or the gauge itself would be to pull the gauge out and disconnect the cable from the back and drive it around, if it's still buzzing it's the cable, if not then it's in the gauge. HTH.

Edit: Make sure the exposed end of the cable isn't touching something while you test it, or it may still make a noise....

Hmmm....

My 81 did that......

I ignored it.......

One day it vibrated the needle right out of the speedo and into the bottom of the instrument cluster.

Lube it or lose it
