Did a quick search and couldn't find what I was looking for- but my Speedo cable it currently leaking into my gauge cluster. I took it off, cleaned everything, and then hooked it back up and made sure it was in properly, and still is leaking. Do I need to replace the entire cable, or is there some other bit that needs replaced? Anyone else ever experience this? 1991 if that matters

Diesel?
AFAIK the gassers don't have a cable driven speedo
In the North American market 91 & 92 with 3FE had cabled driven and I believe the non-ABS equiped 93 - 94 with 1FZ-FE also are cable driven.

Interesting.
My 93, no abs, Aussie spec has speed sensor at the transfer.

Does the EFI not need the speed signal?

I'm sure EFI the needs a speed signal, but the 3FE also is EFI. Something in the cluster must generate a signal in that case.

Now that's an issue I haven't seen forever.

On the trans side you have a gear and adapter. This is what the cable screws onto at the bottom. The o/d of the gear shaft will ride in a seal. Both can wear out. Over time, fluid can be pushed up the cable into the back of your cluster. I don't remember if the cable itself had a seal also. My memory says no but its been decades for me. The seal itself may not be replaceable and i would replace the gear and housing just because of age.

Driven gear. This is a generic picture I found. Don't order off my picture. I don't know your year or how many teeth are on your gear and would hate for you do get it wrong.. I would also replace the speedo cable.

If you have this design, you see the spirals on the driven gear shaft. That's suppose to push oil backwards. It also looks like there's an oring on the shaft itself. In my experience, there is also a seal on the end of the adapter. Like i said, it's been decades since i worked on one.

Replace the speed sensor/cable drive assembly on the side of the transfer case.
IIRC, there is an internal seal on the cable drive that can fail. Not sure if it's replaceable, but worth a bit of time to investigate.

FYI, all 80s have a speed sensor on the transfer case. FJ80s are cable driven, FZJ80s are electronic.

On the cable driven units, the speed sensor is exactly the same design as the electronic units. Internal tach wheel that sends pulses to the ECU.

Mounting is identical. 1 small bolt and it comes right out. Likely uses the same O ring to seal the transfer.

Exactly what I was looking for, thanks for the help!

I guess my question is: Leaking what?

The lube that was in the cable, or is it actually pushing gear oil up from the TC? (I *think* that's possible if the speed sensor seals are blown...)

Transfer case oil leaking from the speedometer cable behind the gauge cluster is apparently a thing. I was pulling the gauge cluster out of my FJ40 this morning for another project and ended up finding oil on the steering column. Traced it back to the speedometer cable. I had already found a small leak from the cable at the transfer case and ordered the o-ring that everyone talks about, but hadn't gotten around to doing the repair. I guess I'll just order the cable assembly too and get it all fixed at once!

I use to do a lot of manual transmission repair work, and most of the transmissions i worked on had a O ring seal between the stem of the driven speed O gear, and the housing that holds the driven gear into the transmission, If that O ring fails it will allow gear lube to migrate up the inside of the speed O cable housing and come out where the speed O cable connects to the back of the cluster,
