*** IMPORTANT EDIT IMPORTANT --- Dont use this hose ((("Dayco Coolant Hose" 80402 ...))), ...

instead use this hose...

GATES 9801 ***

Hi folks, while working recently to replace all the assorted cooling system hoses I learned that two to three of the heater core hoses, specifically for the rear heater core, are not sold separately by Toyota and that they are somewhat smaller than the regular heater core hoses that go to the heater valve and various heater tubes. I've searched for something else that would work well and I think that I have found a formed tube that covers both the 90 degree bent hose off the firewall as well as any short sections of hose that are smaller than the regular heater core hose found elsewhere on our trucks. I thought I would post the part number here in the hope it helps:

GATES 9801 ***

NOTE::: The Dayco hose is slightly too loose for comfort and the Gates hose is much much much tighter. I guess that 1/16th makes a difference?!?

It is specially made for heater core hose replacement and is also specially made for electrochemical resistance. It has the 90 degree bend we need plus about another 18 inches of straight section which can be used anywhere else as needed. It is slightly smaller than 5/8" right around 9/16" and should seal tightly. If you want to replace these hoses this is the only way other than to pay almost 200 dollars to get the hose section along with all the metal tubes etc. I have not had the chance to test the hose yet but as I do I'll definitely post up results. Hope that helps.

Ohh, costs about ten dollars!

The major hose suppliers, Goodyear, Gates, etc offer various lengths of 1/2 & 5/8 inch hose with 90 degree bends.

Thanks that's helpful! :D :flipoff2: :D

Over here in OZ Holden Commodores (VN I think) use a simillar hose with an even tighter 90* bend. About the same price and available everywhere in OZ. Very popular hose for custom applications.

I sure hope that hose works - it is good to know an alternative to Toyota's unobtanium special hoses.

I suggest that you pressure test your new hoses to 15 psi before deciding if they will do the job - and even if they don't leak you may be disppointed in the long run. I have tried generic "close enough" coolant hoses in the past, and I was sometimes disappointed in the way they wouldn't seal long-term..

Please post a follow-up report.

I've been using 1/2 and 5/8 inch Gates heater hose as part of my coolant filter installation for over two years with no issues.

Regrettably I'm not so sure it will work; its just a little too loose for my complete comfort. I think I'm gonna get a 1/2 section and boil it a bit. If'n y'all want I can post the exact make and part number or I can just tell ya its out there somewhere! :D :flipoff2: :D

Gotta source, gotta part number? Seriously, I could use it if ya please! The 5/8" will be too big so if you have a 90 degree 1/2 part number, or even better a 9/16th please post it or at least the source you goto. Thanks.

I got 1/2" Gates 90 degree molded heater hose from Napa. Part # 9801. It has been on the truck for more than 2 years, no problem so far.

Excellent, thanks, out of curiosity, any antics involved in installing it such as soaking in hot water or anything? Thanks.

I didn't have to boil it with hot water. I sprayed the pipe and hose with water, and that was enough for me to slide the hose onto the pipe.

Forgot to mention earlier that there is enough straight section left over for the rest of the job.

Excellent, thanks, I'll call NAPA today!

Hi folks, as an update, the Gates 9801 is a MUCH BETTER FIT than the dayco hose I posted about at top. I'll adjust the top post to match this finding and thanks to the group for the help.
