i have a good question. when you hook up speakers you have a postive and a ground. how much differance in sound does it make if you hook the wires up backwards:bang:

I dont think any.... As long as a speaker wire and a ground are attached to the speaker... I could be wrong tho...

depends on ...

your speakers. newer speakers are polarity sensitive and are usually marked + or -.

most speakers will run either way, because the - side of the speaker coil is not grounded. some advanced speaker systems have grounded frames for eliminating RF feedback into the sound system.

several times i have been working on sound systems and found the wiring switched and i have seen very little discernable difference in the sound.

if it is working don't fix it.

the problem is that i routed the wires thru the roll bar tube and i cant remember which was ground and positive but they still work. sound ok to me

the polarity does not matter much in the sense that you would still get sound either way.

however, in terms of "phasing" its makes a big difference if the speakers are not hooked correctly.

"out of phase" (connected in reverse) speakers will make muffled or unfocused sound whereas "in phase" (connected correctly) will make clear and focused sound.

this is especially noticeable during midrange or vocals part of the song.

Try each one both ways and see how they sound. I had two memphis 6x9s with a 100x2 amp hooked up the correct way (+ to +, - to -) and it sounded like crap. Not that lound and really flat with absolutely no mid/low range.

Switched the + and - connections on one speaker and it sounds 10 times better now.

simple, use a multimeter to check for continuity or resistance

Please put them in phase. They are supposed to be in phase and work optimally in that manor. You will sacrifice sound quality and bass response running them out of phase. If you don't believe me hook them up out of phase and play music with a punchy bass and mid bass, fade from side to side and notice that you have more bass when faded to one side than you do in the middle position. Now hook them up in phase and fade again, you will notice an increase in bass response when in the middle, which is the correct manor.

just curious ...

what do ya need speakers for in a fj40? :bounce:;)
