Speaker size and depth. Need HELP!

I run 6.5" diamond audio components in the front of mine and they fit just fine. Mounting depth on these components are less than 2" and sound quality is fantastic. You will have to cut some of the panel and you can not use the factory grills but this was not a problem for me. You can also run 5.25" speakers in the rear if you do not use the factory grills. You will have to fab up some spacers though but thats not hard at all. I went overboard with my stereo install. I run diamond audio components front and rear, then mounted 1" tweeters where the dash speakers were for the dolby 5.1 surround. In the rear is a JL10W7. Everthing is ran by JL amps. I have to have a good stereo when I go on road trips. I can post up pics if anyone is interested.

Actually I cut the capacitor out of them and wired them in as external speakers for my cb.

For the stereo....(implied) ;) :D

So let's get this straight. 5.25" Eclipses (or other brand with high efficiency and less than 2" depth) are the norm replacement up front when using stock grills. Those that used 6.5"-ers....did they fit up front WITH stock grills???? I used 5.25's up front but they lack bass and would like to go larger with stock grills if possible. Someone please clarify as the threads on this are confusing.

And actually, same question for the rears! Largest size for stock grills...

Thanks!

Promised Pics!

I used Infinity Kappa 5.25" Components - I don't know the depth of the woofer, but it was definately deeper than 2". As you can see from the picture (grill removed), I mounted directly to the door panel, or rather, through the door panel. I used proper length course thread drywall screws to go through the panel and bite into the plastic inserts used for the OEM speakers.

The following are a couple of shots of the tweeter install (special thanks to my partners in crime Steve & Josh). I have some background in car audio, but my friend Steve engineers speakers for a living, so he was definately the expert on this one.

I think it is a smooth looking tweeter location - almost looks like it was meant to be there!

Anyway, I guess that the decision about woofer size depends on whether you would like to keep the OEM grill intact or not. In my opinion, 6.5" woofers would require quite a bit more door panel modification, and are not worth the effort over 5.25" woofers. If crossed over, mounted, and sealed properly, a 5.25" will give you plenty of deep, tight mid-range. For good low range response, you would need to add a sub - 8" or more. I'm planning on a slim 10" sub to go in the stock location in the back.

Hope this helps!

chip - how big of a spacer is needed?

Rick,

The 10" sub would be located directly below the stock location, actually. I have removed the 6.5" "sub" and amp, and will fabricate a box made of MDF that will come close to matching the profile of the quarter panel (quarter panel is used as rear of box to take advantage of all depth available). I will apply Dynamat or similar to the quarter panel to damp out big vibrations. I do not know exact dimensions on the sub - I think it is only 4-5" deep though. It is made for OEM applications, so it is not available yet. I have a source, but am unsure of details now. If the box works out well, there may be more flexibility on the depth of sub to be used. I am planning on using the stock plastic panel to hide the whole assembly - the sub will utilize the vents in the bottom of the panel. I plan on removing the storage pocket and using door as access to the sub's amp and a power inverter. I'll post some progress pics as things move along.

CDN_Cruiser,

The space between the door panel and the door frame is around 1/2 inch. I didn't actually use a spacer - the drywall screws do a great job of constraining the speaker frame. I just had to make sure I didin't over-tighten them and deform the panel.

So, do you think I could fit 5.25" component Polk Audio speakers in the frony doors and some Jl Audio speakers in the middle. Also, does anyone know if the 96 4-runner stealthbox would fit a 95 cruiser without removint the third row seat?
Thanks a lot,
Colin

It's not about speaker diameter... it's all about mounting depth, but right off the bat.... NO. Not with keeping the stock look... maybe if you modify the door panel and use the manufacturer speaker grills.
