I have an issue that has me perplexed. When i bought my truck the driver side woofer sounded blown. It would crackle with bass, requiring me to turn the bass levels way down. Today i pulled the door panel presuming the surround would be rotted, seeing as its 10 years old. However, the speaker looks out of box new. No signs of wear at all. I pulled the speaker from the door and inspected. Visually there is literally nothing wrong with it, but it still sounds blown. Before i try to source a new speaker, does anyone know if this could be caused by anything else?

Also, for price comparison purposes, does anyone know where i could buy a factory woofer for the front door?

Heres a picture of the woofer.

I wish it were, that would be easy to fix. I cant emphasize this enough, the speaker was in perfect condition. I am actaully wondering at this point if the truck wasnt in a minor accident and had the door replaced. None of the switches show wear either.

The voice coil could be broken, it's not something that can be seen on the outside. I'd source one at a junk yard or replace it with a proper subwoofer... but that is certainly not plug and play.

For clarification, i am looking at the front door woofer, not the sub in the back. That will be its own issue. I have found the speaker for 275-280 at a couple of online places. Does anyone know a cheaper source? I would switch to full aftermarket, but i would want to switch all the speakers at the same time, which definitely increases the cost.

Just post a wtb ad. I'd have sent you mine when I replaced them a few months ago. Unfortunately it's in a landfill somewhere...

I have a blown right rear speaker in the wife's 05 I need to change. Figure I'd do both rear doors while I'm at it.

Did you replace with factory, or upgraded ones fireball?

Alright, after endlessly reseaching the cost of replacement woofers, I have conceeded that I can buy all new aftermarket speakers for the cost of the one woofer. As a result, I have been looking at the JBL GTO series and Infinity Reference series, both of which are available in 2 ohms. I know that using 4ohm speakers would give me many more options, but it would also halve the wattage received.

It appears that contrary to Crutchfield, our vehicles actually have 6.5" in the rear doors rather than the stated 4". I have not yet pulled my back door panels, but the actual part number (86160-0w350) appears to be a 6.5" speaker.

This has also lead me to think about the rear sub. I read that the read sub for 2003+ is 6.5" and needs a mounting depth of around 3". It should also be 7.5 ohms, but someone had a 4 ohm speaker work. It looks like the Kicker CWRT 672 6.5" sub would fit. It has dual 2ohm voice coils, so I'll be able to present a 4ohm load.

Does anyone have any experience with this sub? Also, does anyone know what the jbl amplifier is rated for? I don't plan on replacing it, I would like to know more for curiosity. I searched repeatedly and was not able to find an answer.

WisoProud- Thanks for all the research and info. If my wife can stand it, I may wait to see how your build goes and then replace all her speakers. That Mark Levinson Audio is pretty pathetic for a $1300 option...even in 2005.

Has anyone replaced only the woofer in the front door? I'm debating component systems, but I can buy a nicer pair of midbass woofers for the same price. Since my tweeters are fine, this may be a better solution for me.

Secondly, for those of you who have installed aftermarket components in the doors, did you use the supplied crossovers, or did you just wire them up?

I had the same problem and found a simple solution to replace just the woofers in all 4 doors with an alpine 6.5" . I forget the model # , the only trick is op when you remove the old speakers you have to cut out the speaker housing in order to install the new speakers.... It's super easy.

When you remove the old speakers you will notice it's a funny looking speaker but take a pair of side cutters and cut out the inner speaker then take knife and cut out woofer removing it from from the housing. Screw in the new speaker to the housing and then simply rebolt the housing back into the door... Was a simple job and I sm so happy now I can actually turn the base up.
