I know this is going to come off as a little bit OCD but I have noticed that my rear tire oscillates in a rapid fashion when on anything other than smooth tarmac. In preparation for GSMTR I am making some tweaks chasing down a few minor annoyances and this has got me thinking that the frequency of the vibration will prematurely fatigue the metal. With a 295/70/18 Nitto Trail Grappler mounted on the rear there is about 1/16-1/8" of clearance between the rubber and the upright brace that holds the wheel mount. I am thinking that I should loosen the wheel mount and move it towards the frame structure enough so that when I mount the wheel and tighten the three lug nuts, the tire is firmly pressed against the upward brace. I followed Slee's install instructions to a T but I wonder if my thoughts on the matter would have any adverse affects. Slee is pretty good about instructions and I figured he wrote them that way for a reason. Thoughts?

Moving the tire toward the LC should provide less vibe (if that's what you intend by using "oscilate"), but watch the hi-lift mount clearance.

Btw- not sure if we have the same slee version either...

I wheeled that park in my 80 in 2010. It was tough as sheet. Not sure how golden mountain has worked the trails since then?

That is what I meant. When the going gets even slightly rough, you can see the wheel rotating clockwise-counterclockwise at a rapid rate. I figured setting the wheel so that the tire must be compressed before the lug nuts firmly press the wheel to the mounting plate, would totally kill that vibration. The thing that worries me is that if it does vibrate after moving the wheel mount, it will be metal vs. rubber and we all know who will win that battle. Maybe that is why Slee's directions produced a result where there is a little bit of daylight between the rubber and the back swingarm hoop. Hope this makes sense.

The tire should lightly touch the tire carrier. End of discussion. It wont rub, damage paint or the tire, and it will be solid. I had my original carrier installed like this for 2 years and the paint still looks fine on the carrier, the tire is OK too. Good Luck.

X 2

Also, the instructions that came with my Slee carrier result in the tire making contact as described above. Wonder if they have changed over time...

I had my tire lightly touching the upright and the centre support between the hoop sliced the sidewall of the tire over time. I had to move the tire back out so that it doesn't touch. It now shakes as well.

Iron Pig Off Road installed my Slee rear bumper and never tightened the tire up against the carrier. I'm surprised nothing snapped in the month or so of driving with *massive* wobble over bumps and offroad. I had no idea how it was supposed to be installed so I called Slee to complain about the bumper design and he said "you mean the shop never tightened the tire against the metal hoop?" I had no idea, and assumed IPOR knew how to install these. I made it really snug on the hoop and there is zero wobble.

I don't understand this thread topic, so I must be missing something?

Don't you just put the tire on the carrier and press it up against the backing while tightening the lugs?

The Slee tire carrier is adjustable. You can slide it in or out depending on the size of your tire.

i was wondering the same thing as 0066, man, slee is fant-cie.

I just installed a bumper on my friends LX today and we had the same issue. If you mount the tire so that it sits against the hoop then the centre support is going to cut the sidewall.

Mine does the same thing. I figured having the tire up against the metal support beam is okay since it prevents it from moving. I guess over time it could damage the sidewall of the tire if it continues to rub against it.

What doses Slee say about this?

Jon and Sonk is correct. The tire should be pressed into the tube slightly. This will eliminate any rotation on the tire while driving.

Slee says this

With the chat on this thread I decided to adjust my spare tire out a bit, because I had it cinched down on the hoop and more worrisome against that "blade" upright support. Zero wobbles, but I was worried about the upright damaging my tire. After 6 mo of riding really tight against the upright, it had a dent mark but no noticeable wear. I loosened the adjustable mount slightly and rotated my tire/wheel clockwise 45*. The spare is still tight enough that the is no wobble, but it's not squeezing the tire as much as before.

I have a cut in my sidewall from the centre support. I had to move the tire out so that the centre support doesn't touch. Definitely shakes more now. Toasted a brand new tire thanks to that.

Lets see so far.

SLEE battery tray = broken fender well
SLEE rear tire carrier = cut tire sidewall

Slider steps seem to be fine though. Maybe I should take a closer look. lol!

Why not take a file and smooth the edge that caused the problem? It can't be good for that much weight to be rocking back and forth.

It's going to take a lot more than a file. I need to take a grinder to it and knock about a 1/4" of material off it. We installed my friends on Sat. and it was the same thing. He emailed SLEE to let him know. Christo is going to see what changed because he said it definitely isn't supposed to be like that.
