I had a 285/75 16 spare tire installed. The tech. advised i should install a heat shield between the tire and muffler to avoid tire damage from heat. Anyone have any thoughts if this is good advice?

Don't worry about it, there is nothing to protect the rubber under the hood from that heat and it's fine.
Mr.T didn't install a heat shield, I wouldn't either.

IF the tire were next to to a catalytic converter, then I'd say yes. I doubt the muffler is creating enough radiant heat to exceed that which it would see going down a highway in the summertime (tire tread might get to 165° F or thereabouts). Next time I come home from a drive into town I will take my IR temperature gun and see what the muffler on my LX reads and the spare tire next to it.

Now, I'm not saying that ANY significant heat source is good for a tire (dry rot and heat both degrade tires), but I have my doubts your spare is being subjected to any temps worth worrying about, but I may be wrong.

Just got back from driving 40 miles, 93° F. ambient (pretty cool for August here).

I just took a reading on my muffler (3 spots) with an IR temp gun. Got 120°F everywhere I checked on it. The spare tire (4"-5" away from it) read 112° F.

So....I'm going to say, nothing to worry about guys.
