HI Guys---

Now...please don't laugh at a dumb question from a newbie....
How the heck do I get the spare tire off?

I am sure Toyota has fastened it with pure mechanical genius, I just can't figure it out. My rig is new (to me) and I have yet to purchase an OM or FSM. I have looked at other places on the web and some tugging/pushing etc.

I have a 97 LC and there is a good bit off rust around the entire mechanism.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Rob

Check in the rear storage compartment for the jack tools. You ned the hook shaped piece and the extensions (2 of 'em) plus the handle to turn them with.

There's a hole in the rear aluminum tread plate. the 'shepard's hook' goes in there and into a slotted barrel on the chain mechanism. If you point a flashlight in there it's easier to see.

Turn it the correct way and the spare will be lowered from the undercarriage of the truck. Turn it the other way and it brings it back up.

Since it's probably a rust belt truck you might need to do some PM to get the mechanism freed up. I believe landtank posted about this but it may have been Landtoy80 (aka Nimrod.)

Broke, is your problem not being able to lower it, or not being able to get it off once it's lowered? No sweat either way as any time you are doing something for the first time it can get the best of you. We may call you a :princess: once or twice, but all in good fun. Just need to know more before we can give more concise responses.

Rob -

Just removed my spare to see if I could do it. As I dug into the rear compartment I found that the spare tire tools were still brand new, never been used after 120K!! The rubber bands were still holding them together! And the spare still had the original sticker on it.

With this said, it was difficult for me (for the first time) in getting the spare down and for the mechanism to work. It was a little stiff but it did come down after some intense pressure.

The hardest part was actually getting the hook in place and knowing when it was in. What helped me was spinning the extensions until you could feel it catch.

Just some fellow newbe thoughts for you - - -

Good thread. I'm gonna go smack my spare around as well. Ya never know when and where you might need it. :princess:

Thanks

Thanks guys....

I took my rig to Paragon Adventure Park, for the 3rd time and I wanted to make sure that I had all tools and knowledge in removal, JIC!!

What a machine. With average tires, the LC outperformed most of the other machines in our intermediate group. I did a steep, rutted climb that several of the Jeeps had failed. Anyway, sorry to get off the subject, thanks for the info you guys. Thanks to all that keep up this awesome forum.

Rob
