Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere. Every thread related to 'spare' is related to the tire.

A member was kind enough to bring to my attention that if your fob dies, the gx cant be started. the key is useless.

So what are people doing for a spare given these fobs are constantly transmitting? if you hide a spare fob, it seems anyone could get in and drive off.

On the same topic, are the '22/'23 MY's still vulnerable to the relay and canbus attacks? If so, what have you done to protect from theft?

i know i can disable the fob ea time i exit but that's an annoying solution that i could see in time id get lazy about.

are you guys just sheathing your spare fob and hiding it?

You should be able to hold the dead fob against the Start button

Nothing is changed for vulnerability. Faraday bag for your FOB(s).

I can confirm that you can start the car with a dead fob as Acrad's shot of the manual shows. My fob's battery died while I was on a trip and I had to do that to start my '17 GX. The backup theft prevention system is separate from the rest of the fob. It is an RFID-like one where the "chip" in the key gets its power from the radio signal that the reader in the car is using to talk to it. It does not use the remote battery. Older cars without push button starters used this system all the time- the key in the ignition switch was always within range. Now with keyless entry and push button start, it's a backup for when the remote fails.

All remotes are vulnerable to a radio relay attack. But the radio range is intentionally short. Don't store keys in the house near an external wall or use a radio blocking enclosure.

When I travel I take a spare fob in a faraday pouch so I can still lock the car.

I live in a quiet neighborhood and work at a very secure location where likelihood of being targeted is scarce. When I travel, I turn off ACCESS SYSTEM WITH ELEC. KEY in vehicle settings. Though a faraday pouch can offer the same protection, I feel that touching the fob to the Start button is easier than remembering to bag the key/fob when not using.

iirc i looked for that setting. dont think i have it.

I think there is an alternative way to disable with just the fob. Thought I read it on here in the past week or so. May be mistaken.

I had a physical key made from the pull-out physical key in the key fob and that is hidden on the exterior of my vehicle.
Inside, I have hidden a key fob with the battery removed and in a Faraday pouch.
Lost my key once late at night, called the Lexus support and they said to tow my vehicle to the nearest Lexus dealer so they can charge me $400 to make a new key the next day. o_O
Ended up calling my daughter to drive out to us with the extra fob from home.
That will NEVER happen to me again.

Does being in the pouch drain the fob battery?

I also remove the battery, just in case. And even if the battery is dead, as Acrad noted, you should be able to, with the dead battery inserted, touch the key fob to the ignition button and be able to start.
Yeah, I could remove the battery without putting the key fob in the pouch, but the pouch allows me to keep the fob and the battery all in one place.

I do similar to what rm2 does , except I remove key from fob and hide under the car ,, fob is inside somewhere in aluminum foil

hmmmm. what am i missing? I got the rfid pouch, walked up to the door and gx still opened. isn't this supposed to block the gx from seeing the fob?

Maybe I'm mistaken but I thought I saw a diagram which showed the proximity for auto-unlock being different than remote start/unlock. Maybe it was a post by @Acrad but it has been a while and I don't remember.

Which faraday pouch did you order? I’ve seen a few where there are two pouches inside. One protected and another not.

I can’t speak for ‘20+ models but on my ‘12 it shields my FOB from detection.

It should, but that's also why I remove the battery and keep it in the pouch with the key fob.
I should try it on mine. I've never tested to see if it actually works or not.
I just purchased it, removed the battery, stuffed my extra fob in it and hid it inside my vehicle.

my bad! looked again. those pouches have 2 pockets and one of them (front one) wont block signals. the other works. wonder how many think either pocket will work.

wonder if anyone makes something more streamlined that fits in your pocket better. i hate crap in my pockets. going to look around.

thanks for chiming in everyone. loving this group!

You can use the front pocket for an extra battery!
